~ Chapter Six: The Bond's Price ~ The tension in the cabin was suffocating, thick as the storm clouds rolling across the sky outside. Evelyn sat at the rickety table, her hands wrapped around a chipped mug Kael had filled with water from a nearby stream. She sipped absently, her mind running in circles around everything Kael had told her. The rogues. Lila. The bond. Every piece felt like part of a puzzle she couldn’t fully see, and no matter how hard she tried to fit them together, the picture remained blurred. Kael paced near the window, his sharp gaze scanning the forest for movement. He was like a coiled spring, his muscles taut with a readiness to strike. The silence between them stretched until it was unbearable. “You can’t keep shutting me out, Kael,” Evelyn said, her voice cutting through the stillness. Kael stopped mid-step, his back to her. “I’m not shutting you out.” “Really?” Evelyn challenged, rising from her seat. “Because it feels like I’m being dragged through this nightmare with no clue what’s waiting at the end.” Kael turned to face her, his amber eyes smoldering. “You think I have all the answers? I’m trying to keep you alive, Evelyn. That’s all that matters.” “That’s not enough for me,” she shot back, her frustration boiling over. “I deserve to know why my life has been turned upside down. Why I feel this… this connection to you that doesn’t make any sense.” Kael’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, she thought he wouldn’t answer. But then his shoulders sagged, the tension in his posture giving way to something more vulnerable. “The bond is more than just a connection,” he said quietly. “It’s a link. A tether. I can feel your emotions, your fear, your anger. It’s like you’re a part of me now, and I’m a part of you.” Evelyn stared at him, her heart pounding. “Why me?” Kael stepped closer, his gaze holding hers. “I don’t know. The bond doesn’t follow rules. It doesn’t care about logic or choice. It just… happens.” Evelyn’s breath hitched as he reached for her hand, his touch warm and grounding. “But it’s dangerous,” he continued. “Because the stronger the bond gets, the more it puts you at risk. The rogues will do anything to exploit it. To use you against me.” Evelyn swallowed hard, her pulse racing. “What happens if they do?” Kael’s grip on her hand tightened, his voice dropping to a near growl. “Then I’ll tear them apart.” Before she could respond, a sharp knock echoed through the cabin, freezing them both. Kael’s head snapped toward the door, his entire body going rigid. “Stay behind me,” he ordered, his voice low and commanding. Evelyn nodded, her heart hammering as Kael moved toward the door. He opened it cautiously, his stance ready for a fight. A man stood on the threshold, his silver hair gleaming in the morning light. His sharp blue eyes scanned the room before settling on Kael with a smirk. “Still playing the hero, I see,” the man said, his voice smooth and mocking. Kael growled low in his throat. “What are you doing here, Alaric?” “Relax, old friend,” Alaric said, raising his hands in mock surrender. “I’m not here to fight. I’m here to help.” Kael didn’t lower his guard. “Help? Since when do you help anyone but yourself?” Alaric chuckled. “Fair point. But this time, our interests align. The rogues are getting bolder, and you’ve become their favorite target. If they succeed, it’ll be bad news for all of us.” Evelyn stepped closer, her curiosity outweighing her fear. “Who is he?” Kael glanced back at her, his expression conflicted. “Alaric is… an old ally. He’s not to be trusted.” “Harsh,” Alaric said, his smirk unfaltering. “But not entirely untrue. Still, I’m your best shot at figuring out what the rogues are planning.” Kael hesitated, his gaze darting between Alaric and Evelyn. Finally, he stepped aside, allowing Alaric to enter. Alaric’s eyes landed on Evelyn, his smirk widening. “And this must be the infamous bondmate. I see why the rogues are so interested.” Evelyn bristled under his gaze. “What do you know about them?” “Plenty,” Alaric said, his tone casual. “Enough to know they’re working for someone who’s far more dangerous than you realize.” “Who?” Kael demanded. Alaric’s smirk faded, his expression turning serious. “A wolf who doesn’t believe in pack boundaries or laws. Someone who thinks the bond between you two is the key to breaking the natural order.” “What do you mean?” Evelyn asked, her voice trembling. Alaric met her gaze, his blue eyes sharp. “The bond isn’t just a connection, sweetheart. It’s a power. One that can either strengthen the balance between humans and wolves… or destroy it.” The room fell silent as his words sank in. Evelyn’s mind raced, the weight of his revelation pressing down on her. “What do they want from me?” she whispered. Alaric’s gaze softened, almost pitying. “To force the bond to its breaking point. To turn it into a weapon. And if they succeed… there won’t be a world left to save.”
