Morning at the Hospital
The first rays of sunlight filtered through the hospital curtains as Olivia stirred awake in the uncomfortable chair beside Sophia’s bed. Her body ached from sleeping upright, and her stomach groaned loudly, protesting its emptiness. She glanced at Sophia, who lay pale but peaceful under the sterile white sheets.
“Don’t worry, Soph,” Olivia whispered, brushing a strand of hair from her sister’s forehead. “I’ll figure this out. You’re going to get that surgery, no matter what.”
Sophia’s faint smile gave Olivia a small glimmer of hope, though it did little to ease the knot of anxiety tightening in her chest. Forcing herself to stand, she stretched stiffly before heading toward the door.
“I’ll be right back,” she murmured. “Just need some food.”
As she stepped outside, the chilly morning air hit her face, reminding her of how exhausted she felt. The café across the street smelled heavenly—fresh coffee and warm pastries—but when she reached into her pocket, reality slapped her hard. No money. Not even a single coin.
Sighing heavily, Olivia turned away, her stomach twisting with hunger and frustration. Just as she stepped onto the sidewalk, the screech of tires caught her attention. A sleek black luxury car pulled up beside her, gleaming under the morning sun. Before she could react, a sharply dressed butler emerged from the passenger side, his posture rigid and formal.
“Miss Martinez?” he asked, his voice calm but commanding.
Olivia blinked, startled. “Yes… Who are you?”
“My employer wishes to speak with you,” the butler replied smoothly, gesturing toward the car. “Please, step inside.”
Olivia crossed her arms defensively. “I’m sorry, but I don’t know who your ‘employer’ is. And I don’t get into cars with strangers.”
The butler raised an eyebrow, unfazed by her resistance. “My employer is aware of your situation, Miss Martinez. He can help you secure the funds for your sister’s surgery—but only if you hear him out.”
Her heart skipped a beat. Help? Could it really be that simple? Still, suspicion gnawed at her. “Why would he do that? What does he want in return?”
Before the butler could answer, the tinted window of the car rolled down, revealing a man seated in the backseat. His piercing blue eyes locked onto hers, and a sly smile spread across his handsome yet calculating face.
“Miss Martinez,” he said, his voice smooth and deliberate. “If you’d like to save your sister, I suggest you get in the car. Time is of the essence, after all.”
Olivia hesitated, torn between caution and desperation. Finally, she swallowed her pride and climbed into the car, the leather seats cool against her skin.

The Penthouse Proposal
The drive was silent except for the hum of the engine. Olivia stared out the window, her mind racing with questions. Who was this man? Why would he offer to help her without any apparent motive?
When they arrived at a towering skyscraper downtown, the car ascended directly into a private elevator that opened into a lavish penthouse suite. The opulence left Olivia momentarily speechless—marble floors, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city, and artwork worth more than her entire life savings.
“Have a seat,” the man said, gesturing to a plush couch. He poured himself a glass of whiskey, swirling it lazily as he studied her. “Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Marcus Hale, CEO of Hale Industries.”
Olivia’s eyes widened. Marcus Hale. Aiden’s biggest rival. She had heard about him during meetings at Taylor Enterprises—how ruthless and cunning he was in business. What could he possibly want with her?
“I’ll cut straight to the chase,” Marcus continued, leaning forward slightly. “Your sister needs surgery, correct? Half a million dollars’ worth. Am I right?”
Olivia nodded cautiously. “Yes…”
“And you’re currently unemployed, thanks to your former boss, Aiden Taylor,” Marcus added, his tone laced with amusement. “Quite the predicament, isn’t it?”
“How do you know all this?” Olivia demanded, her voice trembling slightly.
Marcus chuckled darkly. “Let’s just say I make it my business to stay informed. Now, here’s my offer. I’ll pay for your sister’s surgery—in full—and provide you with a job as my personal assistant. Eight thousand dollars per month, plus bonuses. Generous, wouldn’t you agree?”
Olivia’s jaw dropped. It sounded too good to be true. But something about his demeanor set off alarm bells in her mind. “Why would you do this? What’s the catch?”
Marcus smirked, swirling his drink again. “Oh, there’s always a catch, Miss Martinez. In exchange for my generosity, I expect loyalty. Complete and utter loyalty. Anything less, and our arrangement ends immediately.”
Unbeknownst to Olivia, Marcus’s real plan was far darker. By hiring someone close to Aiden, he intended to gather insider information about Taylor Enterprises—information he could use to crush his rival once and for all. But for now, he kept his true intentions hidden behind a mask of charm.
Temptation and Suspicion
Despite her reservations, Olivia couldn’t deny the appeal of Marcus’s offer. Eight thousand dollars a month would not only cover Sophia’s medical expenses but also give them a chance at stability. For the first time in days, she allowed herself to imagine a future where they weren’t drowning in debt or constantly fighting for survival.
“I… I need to think about it,” Olivia stammered, trying to buy herself time.
“There’s nothing to think about,” Marcus countered smoothly. “You have twenty-four hours to decide. After that, the offer expires. Tick-tock, Miss Martinez.”
His words sent a chill down her spine, but before she could respond, her phone buzzed in her pocket. Pulling it out, she saw a notification—a text message from an unknown number.
Her breath hitched as she read the message:
“I’ll pay for your sister’s surgery. Meet me tonight at 8 PM. Alone.”
The sender’s name wasn’t displayed, but the implication was clear. Only one person knew enough about her situation to send such a message. Aiden.

Olivia stared at the screen, her heart pounding wildly. Was this a trap? A cruel joke? Or was Aiden actually offering to help her? Either way, the timing was suspicious. Why now? And why would he suddenly change his mind?
She glanced up at Marcus, who was watching her intently, clearly waiting for her response. Did he suspect anything? If so, what would he do?
Forced to choose between two dangerous paths, Olivia slipped her phone back into her pocket, her mind reeling. Whatever decision she made next could change everything—
for better or worse.
