Chapter Two: Into the Lion’s Den
Nicole stood in front of the gleaming glass doors of Carter Enterprises, staring up at the imposing building. Its towering structure loomed over her, a stark reminder of the life she had walked away from. The bustle of the city—the honking cars, hurried footsteps, and chatter of pedestrians—faded into the background as her heart pounded in her chest. Two years ago, she had vowed never to return here. Yet here she was, standing on the threshold of a past she had worked so hard to leave behind.
Taking a deep breath, she hugged her arms around herself and stepped inside. The familiar scent of polished wood and rich espresso hit her immediately, stirring memories she wished would stay buried. The lavish reception area, with its marble floors and modern decor, was as pristine as she remembered. Every detail seemed frozen in time—except for her. Nicole had changed.
The elevator ride to the penthouse felt agonizingly slow. Each ding of a passing floor seemed to echo louder than it should, heightening her nerves. By the time the doors opened, she had steeled herself, ready to face whatever lay ahead.
Ethan’s office was almost exactly as she remembered it. The dark wood furniture, the abstract art on the walls, and the floor-to-ceiling windows offering a breathtaking view of the city—it was all the same. Yet the space felt colder, emptier, as though it had been drained of the energy that once made it intimidating.
“Nicole.”
The voice was quiet but unmistakable. She turned and found Ethan standing near his desk. His tall frame was silhouetted against the sprawling city skyline, but even in the soft light, she could see the changes in him. He looked thinner, his face more angular, with faint lines etched into his once-youthful features. His piercing blue eyes, which had always seemed so confident, now held a vulnerability she had never seen before.
“Ethan,” she said, her voice steady despite the storm of emotions swirling inside her.
He gestured toward the chair opposite his desk. “Please, sit.”
Nicole hesitated, her heels rooted to the plush carpet. She had promised herself she wouldn’t let him rattle her, but the sight of him—so familiar yet so different—shook her resolve. Finally, she moved forward and sat, her posture stiff, her gaze unwavering.
The silence between them was thick, charged with unspoken words and unresolved pain. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Ethan broke the silence.
“Thank you for coming,” he began, his voice low and strained. “I know it wasn’t easy for you.”
Nicole folded her arms across her chest. “Let’s not waste time, Ethan. Why am I here?”
He sighed heavily, running a hand through his dark hair. “Because I’ve made a mess of things,” he admitted. “The company is on the brink of collapse, and my personal life…” He paused, his voice catching. “My personal life is in ruins. I don’t know how to fix any of it.”
Nicole raised an eyebrow. “And what does that have to do with me? We’re not married anymore. Your problems aren’t my problems.”
“I know,” he said quickly, his tone desperate. “But I don’t know where else to turn. You’ve always been the one who understood me, Nicole. The one who could see past the noise and tell me the truth, no matter how hard it was to hear. I need that now more than ever.”
Her jaw tightened. “You’re asking for help now? After everything you put me through? Do you have any idea what it was like, Ethan? Living in that house, waiting for you to notice me, to care about me? You made me feel invisible.”
Ethan flinched at her words, his shoulders sagging under the weight of her accusations. “I know I hurt you,” he said quietly. “And I will never forgive myself for that. I didn’t realize what I had until it was gone, Nicole. I was a fool.”
Her heart clenched at the raw honesty in his voice, but she forced herself to stay firm. “You’re right—you were a fool. And now you want me to swoop in and fix everything for you?”
He shook his head. “No, that’s not what I’m asking. I’m asking for a chance to make things right. Not just for the company, but for us. Please, Nicole. I can’t do this without you.”
She looked away, her eyes landing on the skyline beyond the windows. The life she had rebuilt for herself flashed before her eyes—simple, peaceful, and free from the chaos that had defined their marriage. She had worked too hard to leave it behind. But the vulnerability in Ethan’s voice, the regret in his eyes, made it difficult to turn away completely.
“I’ll listen,” she said at last, her voice colder than she intended. “But don’t mistake this for forgiveness or trust. I’m only here because Mark said you were in trouble.”
Ethan nodded, his expression a mixture of relief and anguish. “That’s all I’m asking.”
Before either of them could say more, the door burst open, and Mark Thompson strode in. His face was tight with urgency, his usual composure shaken.
“Nicole,” Mark said, his tone tinged with surprise. “I didn’t think you’d actually come.”
“She’s here because I asked her to,” Ethan interjected, his voice hardening slightly. “What’s going on, Mark?”
Mark hesitated, glancing between them before pulling out his phone. “We’ve got a bigger problem,” he said grimly. “It’s not just the company. Ethan… there’s something else.”
Ethan frowned. “What do you mean?”
Mark turned the screen toward them, revealing a news headline that made Nicole’s stomach drop.
“Billionaire Ethan Carter Missing Amid Financial Scandal.”
Nicole’s heart raced as the weight of the words sank in. Missing? Her eyes darted to Ethan, who was staring at the screen in shock.
“What the hell is this?” Ethan demanded, his voice rising.
“It’s what the media is running with,” Mark replied, his tone clipped. “And if we don’t get ahead of it, this could ruin everything.”
Nicole watched the exchange in silence, her mind reeling. She had agreed to come here for answers, but now it seemed the situation was far more complicated than she had imagined. For the first time in years, she wasn’t sure what to do next.
