Chapter Five: Torn Paths The days blurred together for Nicole, each one blending into the next as she wrestled with her emotions. After her meeting with Ethan, she had told herself that she needed to take a step back, to let her mind settle before making any decisions. But the more she tried to distance herself, the more the pull of the past seemed to draw her in. Every time she thought about Ethan’s apology, his vulnerability, she felt a tug deep in her chest. But then she remembered the years of loneliness, the nights spent waiting for him to notice her, and the cold reality of their marriage. She couldn’t forget that, no matter how much he claimed to have changed. Her phone buzzed with a text from Ryan. She stared at it for a moment, the words seeming to offer a lifeline in the midst of her turmoil. Ryan: “I was thinking about you. How are you holding up?” Nicole smiled softly, her fingers hovering over the screen. He had been there for her through everything—steady, reliable, and kind. But as much as she appreciated him, a part of her couldn’t shake the feeling that he was too good for her. She couldn’t let him get caught in the chaos that still clung to her life with Ethan. She replied after a long pause, “I’m okay. Just trying to figure things out.” Ryan: “Whenever you’re ready, we can talk. I’m here for you, Nicole.” Her chest tightened. She couldn’t bring herself to tell him the whole truth—how Ethan’s return had shifted everything, how part of her still ached for the man she had once loved. She put her phone down with a sigh and ran a hand through her hair. Later that evening, Sophie came over, the clinking of a bottle of wine signaling that the night was about to take a familiar turn. She wasted no time, walking straight into Nicole’s living room with her usual ease. “I brought reinforcements,” Sophie said, holding up the bottle. “And it looks like you could use it.” Nicole laughed lightly, a sound that felt unfamiliar after the past few days. “I don’t know if I can drink away my problems, but I’m willing to try.” Sophie set the bottle down and flopped onto the couch. “You can at least try to enjoy a drink before you decide whether or not to fall for Ethan’s charm all over again.” Nicole winced. “I don’t know if it’s charm. I think it’s guilt. He’s… he’s struggling, Sophie. And part of me wants to help, but another part of me is terrified of what that will do to me.” Sophie eyed her carefully. “Nicole, you’ve been through hell because of him. He doesn’t deserve to have you risk everything you’ve built just because he’s suddenly feeling sorry for himself.” “I know,” Nicole whispered, her eyes distant. “But it’s hard. I thought I had moved on, Sophie. I really did. But now—he’s asking for my help, and I can’t ignore that. I don’t know if it’s because I care, or because I feel like I have to fix it.” Sophie’s gaze softened. “You don’t owe him that. And you don’t need to fix him. You’ve spent so long fixing yourself, Nicole. Don’t throw that away just because he finally wants you back.” Nicole sighed. “I don’t even know if I want him back. I don’t know what I want. But I can’t stand the idea of him self-destructing, either.” Sophie leaned forward, her voice serious. “Then it’s time to put yourself first. Don’t let him manipulate your kindness into guilt. You’ve done enough for him already.” Nicole stayed quiet, staring at the glass of wine in her hand. Sophie’s words echoed in her mind, but the path ahead felt murky, full of uncertainties. The next morning, Nicole received a call from Mark. She had avoided his calls after her last meeting with Ethan, unsure of where she stood with any of them. But now, his name flashing on the screen felt unavoidable. She answered, her voice cold. “Mark.” “Nicole,” he said, his voice edged with urgency. “I need to see you. It’s about Ethan.” Nicole’s heart sank. “What about him?” Mark hesitated before speaking again. “He’s not handling this well. He’s pushing everyone away, even those who are trying to help. But there’s more to this than what he’s telling you. I don’t think you’re getting the full picture.” Her pulse quickened. “What are you talking about?” “I can’t explain everything over the phone,” Mark continued. “But if you’re serious about helping him, you need to hear what I have to say. It’s not just his company on the line. It’s his life.” Nicole felt the weight of his words sink in. “I’ll meet you. But only if you’re telling me the truth.” “I swear, Nicole, I’m not trying to play games here. Just trust me.” When Nicole arrived at the secluded café where Mark had asked to meet, she found him waiting at a corner table, his face shadowed with worry. He looked up when she walked in, and his expression softened, though there was something unreadable in his eyes. “Thanks for coming,” Mark said, gesturing for her to sit. Nicole sat, arms crossed, her gaze unwavering. “Tell me what’s going on, Mark. What’s Ethan really hiding?” Mark hesitated, his fingers tapping the table nervously. “Ethan’s been hiding a lot. And it’s not just about the company’s issues. He’s made some dangerous deals, Nicole. Deals that could destroy him—and the people around him—if they come to light.” Nicole’s heart skipped a beat. “What kind of deals?” Mark leaned in, lowering his voice. “I can’t say much, but I’ll tell you this: Ethan’s in deeper than he’s letting on. And if the wrong people find out, it won’t just be his company at risk. It’ll be his life.” Nicole felt a chill run down her spine. She had walked into this meeting hoping for clarity, but now all she felt was uncertainty. “Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?” she demanded. “I didn’t know how to,” Mark said, his voice strained. “But I know you care about him. And I know you’re trying to make a decision. I just wanted you to know everything before you get involved any further.” Nicole stood abruptly, her mind racing. “I need to think. Don’t contact me again until I’ve figured this out.” Mark didn’t protest as she walked out, the weight of his words hanging in the air behind her. She had wanted answers, but now all she had were more questions—and a growing fear that helping Ethan might come at a price she wasn’t ready to pay.
