The Cold Iron

1207 Words
Gloria’s POV Silence dropped over the entire training ground like a heavy wool blanket. Julian stood frozen on the high wooden platform, his hands still raised toward the sky, holding the dull piece of gold aloft. The confident smirk that had been plastered across his handsome face completely dissolved into a look of sheer, panicked confusion. He stared up at the emblem, his fingers twitching violently against the cold metal as he waited for the ancient Sorensen magic to answer his call. The intricate wolf engravings carved into the surface remained completely dark, offering zero warmth, zero light, and zero power. "Awaken!" Julian barked, his voice cracking slightly as he forced another heavy wave of his Alpha aura into the relic. He squeezed the metal so tightly his knuckles turned entirely white, his chest heaving as sweat broke out across his forehead. "By the blood of command, I order you to awaken!" Nothing happened. The emblem remained as dead as a common rock sitting in the dirt. A loud whisper rippled through the front ranks of the vanguard officers. Old veteran warriors who had served under my father for decades shifted on their feet, exchanging sharp, knowing looks with one another. They knew the history of the emblem far better than Julian did. They knew that the ancient relic had been forged with blood magic, designed to respond only to the genuine lineage of House Sorensen. "Is something wrong with the crest?" a noble lady seated in the balcony behind me whispered loudly into her feather fan. "Why is it not glowing?" a young lord asked, leaning over the stone railing to get a better view of the stage. "When Lord Sorensen raised that crest, the light could be seen from the lower town." Julian’s face flushed a deep, embarrassing red. He lowered his arms slightly, looking down at Elder Malaki with wide, desperate eyes. The old councilor stood beside the velvet pillow, his jaw dropped in visible shock as he stared at the lifeless metal. Malaki cleared his throat nervously, taking a small step closer to Julian and murmuring something quiet under his breath that I could not quite hear from the royal box. "Try it again, my Lord," Malaki whispered loudly enough for the front row to catch. "Focus your energy." "I am focusing!" Julian hissed back, his voice dripping with anger and humiliation. He raised the emblem high above his head once more, shutting his eyes tight as he roared the ancient activation phrase at the top of his lungs. "Awaken, in the name of the High Council!" The wind blew softly across the open dirt field, carrying the sound of his desperate voice into the silent air, but the emblem remained entirely dead. I leaned forward in my chair, resting my forearms against the cool marble railing of the royal balcony. A cold, sharp satisfaction bloomed deep inside my chest as I watched my ex-boyfriend squirm under the gaze of hundreds of watching eyes. All his grand speeches, all his arrogance, and all his careful plotting had led him directly to this public disaster. "He looks ridiculous," I murmured softly, not bothering to hide the faint smile touching the corners of my lips. Beside me, William did not smile, but his golden eyes burned with an intense, calculated focus. He kept his tall frame perfectly upright, resting one gloved hand on the pommel of his sword while his other hand remained casually tucked behind his back. "He stole the physical key," William said, his deep voice carrying a quiet authority that only I could hear. "But he forgot that the lock requires a soul." On the stage below, Julian’s panic quickly turned into blind, reckless rage. He lowered his arms and glared directly across the field, his dark eyes scanning the royal balcony until they locked onto me. He pointed a trembling, gloved finger straight at my face, his voice booming across the training grounds with frantic aggression. "She tampered with it!" Julian shouted, his face contorted in anger as he took three fast steps toward the edge of the platform. "Gloria Sorensen placed a curse on her family’s emblem before she was banished! She sabotaged the relic so no one else could lead the vanguard!" The crowd gasped loudly at his accusation. Head councilors and highborn lords turned their heads in unison, their eyes landing squarely on me as I sat beside the Supreme Alpha. Elder Malaki quickly stepped forward, trying to regain control of the spiraling situation. "Lord Julian, please, pull yourself together—" "I will not be silent!" Julian yelled, cutting the elder off without a shred of respect. He pointed at me again, his chest heaving under his heavy steel armor. "Look at her sitting up there in the royal box! She knows what she did! She deliberately ruined the emblem because she knew she was losing her family's status!" I did not flinch, nor did I shrink back into my seat. Instead, I stood up slowly from the velvet chair, smoothing down the front of my dress as I stepped right up to the front railing of the balcony. The entire courtyard went dead silent, waiting to hear how the disgraced noble daughter would answer the prince's wild accusation. "You speak of sabotage, Julian," I said, my voice clear, steady, and loud enough to carry across the quiet field. "But you seem to forget the fundamental truth of the item you stole from my father’s desk." Julian gritted his teeth, taking another aggressive step forward. "Do not play games with me, Gloria! Tell the Council what spell you cast on this metal!" "I cast no spell," I replied, holding his furious gaze without a single trace of fear. "The Sorensen emblem has never been a simple piece of jewelry that anyone can pick up and use. It was bound centuries ago to the blood of my ancestors. It answers only to honor, loyalty, and living Sorensen blood. You possess none of those things." A series of quiet chuckles broke out among the veteran vanguard soldiers standing on the field. Several old officers nodded their heads in quiet agreement, their respect for my father’s name clearly overriding their fear of the young prince. Julian’s face turned from red to an ugly, dark purple. "I am the future leader of this pack!" he screamed, his control completely snapping in front of the entire court. "I hold the official decree from the High Council! The blood of a dead house means nothing against the authority of the throne!" "Authority cannot force dead iron to wake up, Julian," I said softly, letting my words fall into the silent courtyard like heavy stones. "You took our land, you took our home, and you took our title. But you cannot steal what was never yours to command." Mad with utter humiliation, Julian spun around, raised the heavy golden emblem high over his head with both hands, and slammed it down against the hard stone edge of the dais with all his physical strength. The heavy golden crest shattered completely into three broken pieces, leaving Julian staring down at the ruined metal in horror while a massive, shocked gasp echoed across the entire court.
