The drive home from the Mehta family lunch, nine days later, was very quiet. This was, Maya had learned, a particular kind of quiet. There was the silence of the penthouse in the early mornings before the household staff arrived, which was clean and unoccupied and almost peaceful. There was the silence of their shared dinners, which was loaded and navigated. There was the silence of his study, which bled through the door and had a quality of focused pressure to it that she'd learned to identify from halfway down the corridor. And there was this silence, which was the silence of something building. She sat on her side of the backseat. Outside, Mumbai's evening traffic inched past — a city doing what it always did, which was proceed with great noise and minimal apology. Inside the car was darker. Inside the car, Atharva sat with his hands resting on his thighs and his face turned toward his window, and he had not spoken in twelve minutes, and the twelve minutes had texture. The Mehta family lunch had been his idea. Or not his idea — a necessity, he'd said, a maintenance of relations, a public smoothing of the irregularity that gossip had made irregular. Priya's parents, who knew what had happened, who had been paid to know what had happened, who had agreed to say precisely nothing about what had happened in exchange for the kind of generosity that came with the Raisinghani name. They were, therefore, required to perform normality. Maya had performed normality for two and a half hours. She had performed it through Priya's mother calling her beti in the exact tone she'd used at the wedding, with the practiced amnesia of someone who had decided convenience was a form of love. She had performed it through Priya's father asking Atharva about Q3 earnings with the collegial comfort of a man who had sold his daughter's best friend and made his peace with it over a weekend. She had performed it through the biriyani that was genuinely excellent — she'd eaten two helpings because she wasn't going to be punished for a lunch she hadn't asked for — and through the family photographs that Priya's mother insisted on taking, on her phone, for her own album. For my own album, she had said, with a smile like a closed fist. She had performed it through all of that. In the car, after, she had performed fifteen minutes of composure. Now the fifteen minutes were up. "She called me beti," Maya said. To no one in particular. To the window, to the back of the driver's head, to the city outside. "Four times. She called me beti and asked if I was eating enough and told me I had good bones for children." Atharva said nothing. "Priya's mother," Maya continued, conversationally, in the voice she used when she was angry enough that conversational was the only safe register. "Priya's mother, who was there. When it happened. Mrs. Mehta, who watched the pandit and watched you bring me down that corridor, who has presumably seen the newspapers, who definitely knows exactly what her daughter did and what you did and what my parents did, sat across a lunch table from me and called me beti like she was giving me something." Still nothing. "I want to be clear," she said, "that I understand why everyone involved has made the choices they've made. I am a logical person. I understand leverage and debt and the math of self-preservation." She turned and looked at him. "But you should know that I have been performing for nine days without losing my temper a single time, and today was the most expensive performance yet, and I am telling you now, before it becomes relevant: I have a finite amount of this." He was looking at his window. "Are you listening?" she said. "Yes." "Then say something." He turned. In the backseat dark his face was all clean lines and shadow, the gala week behind them and this Sunday evening stripped back, and he looked at her with the patient opacity she had spent nine days navigating and she felt, suddenly, the complete and comprehensive exhaustion of nine days of navigating it. "What would you like me to say?" he asked. "Anything," she said. "I don't care. Something that acknowledges that what just happened was not a normal Sunday lunch—" "It wasn't a normal Sunday lunch." "Then say that." "I just did." "With more than — with something behind it." She gestured, a motion that communicated nothing precisely and everything approximately. "You speak to me like you're reading from a legal document. Everything is clean and precise and absolutely uninhabitable and I have been living in it for nine days and today Mrs. Mehta called me beti and I—" She stopped herself. Her hands were in fists on her lap. She hadn't noticed that. She opened them deliberately, flattened her palms on her thighs, made herself breathe. The car moved through traffic. Ten seconds. Fifteen. "I made an error," Atharva said. She looked at him. "The lunch. It was too early." He said it with the same flatness as always, but underneath it she caught something — not quite acknowledgment, but honest assessment. "I misjudged your capacity for it at this stage." "My capacity." "Your comfort. Your—" a slight pause, the kind he made when reaching for a word he didn't usually need "—your tolerance." "You're treating me like a resource with a performance threshold." "I'm trying," he said, and the word trying sat very strangely in his mouth, like something that didn't live there, "to acknowledge that today was difficult." "It was." She held his gaze. "Nine days ago you forced me into a marriage. Six days ago you made me sign a contract under duress. Eight days ago my parents told me they consented to all of this in advance." She watched his face. "And today I had to eat biriyani with the people who benefited from it and pretend everything was a love story." He was quiet. "And you want to know the worst part?" She was not going to cry. She was completely clear on this. "The biriyani was excellent. I ate two helpings. And I hated myself for eating two helpings, because I didn't want to find anything at that table worth eating, but it was genuinely excellent biriyani and I—" She heard herself. She pressed her lips together. And then, to her absolute horror and surprise, she laughed. It came out of nowhere, out of the absurdity of what she'd just said — the genuine, stupid helplessness of excellent biriyani being the thing she'd broken on — and it was a short laugh, sharp-edged, with no happiness in it, but it was unmistakably a laugh. She looked at Atharva. He was looking at her with an expression she had not seen on him before. Not the closed boardroom face, not the gala face, not the 3 a.m. terrace face. Something — and she couldn't identify it, couldn't place it anywhere — something almost unwound. "The biriyani," he said. "Don't," she said. "I know." "Priya's mother makes it with—" "Atharva." He stopped. They looked at each other in the quiet car, with the city noise outside and the traffic moving and the space between them charged with something she did not want to examine. She was still angry. She needed him to understand that. The laugh had not dissolved the anger; it had just briefly sat beside it. She turned forward. She looked at the back of the driver's head. She let fourteen seconds pass. And then she turned back and she slapped him. Not hard. Not vicious — she was not a violent person, she had never in her twenty-two years slapped another human being, and the palm-against-his-cheekbone contact that happened was a product of nine days' compressed fury and two and a half hours of performance and excellent biriyani, and it landed with enough force to be unambiguous and not enough to cause pain. She registered it the moment it happened. The sound of it in the enclosed space. His head turning slightly with it. The silence afterward. She stared at her own hand. She stared at him. His face was turned away from her at the angle the slap had left it, and she couldn't see his expression, and for a long, terrible moment she had no idea what was coming — she thought: this was a catastrophic mistake, this was exactly the kind of— He turned back. He was smiling. Not a performance, not the social management she'd watched him deploy all week. Something real — she was certain of it, even though she had no reference point for what his real smile looked like, because she was looking at it right now and it was different from anything she'd seen on his face before. Crooked, and slightly wondering, and directed at her like a thing he hadn't meant to let out. She stared at it. "I like fire," he said. His voice was different. Quieter than usual, and with something underneath it that made the air in the car feel different, that made her very conscious of the space between them and the fact that the space between them had decreased somewhat and she wasn't sure when that had happened. "Let's see how long yours lasts," he said. She looked at the smile. She looked at his dark eyes above it, which were doing the opposite of the smile — still and intent and watching her with a focus that went past the boardroom version by a considerable margin. Like he was looking at something he hadn't expected. She thought about fire. She thought about nine days of calculated composure and what it had cost. She thought about what it meant that the first real thing she'd seen on his face was provoked by her slap. She thought about what kind of man that said he was. She turned to face forward again. "My fire," she said, with complete steadiness, "has been burning for nine days without any help from you. I wouldn't test it if I were you." He said nothing. But the smile was still there. She could feel it in the dark. She stared at the road ahead and she thought: this is a new variable. I need to account for it. And beneath that, quieter, in the register she'd been pressing down for nine days: He looked so different when he wasn't performing. He looked like he might actually be a person under there. She pressed it down again. Hard. All the way down. Counted: day sixteen of seven hundred and thirty.
