Chapter 9 — The First Shift of a Queen

1057 Words
The moon rose swollen and red. It bled through torn clouds, staining the sky like an open wound. The wind howled across the palace spires, carrying with it the scent of rain, war, and something far older. Ivy couldn’t breathe. Her chest burned, every inhale scraping against raw nerves. Heat flooded her veins, rolling in violent waves. Her bones ached. Her skin prickled as though something beneath it was trying to tear free. She staggered across her chamber, clutching at the bedpost. “Not now,” she whispered desperately. But her body did not listen. The bond pulsed. Her wolf screamed. Rowan sensed it instantly. He shot upright in the antechamber, heart slamming violently against his ribs. Power rippled through the thin thread Ivy had given him, flaring like a warning bell. She’s losing control. He was at her door in seconds. “Ivy!” No answer. The scent of blood and wildfire slammed into him. He shoved the door open. The chamber had become a storm. Wind whipped violently around the room, curtains snapping, furniture scraping across the marble floor. Silver light pulsed from Ivy’s body, swirling like living smoke. She stood at the center, clutching her chest, eyes glowing molten gold. “Rowan” she gasped. “I can’t” Her scream tore through the chamber. Her spine arched violently. Bones cracked. Rowan lunged forward, then froze as raw power slammed into him, throwing him backward into the wall. Pain exploded across his back. Mireya burst into the room behind him, her staff blazing with protective runes. “It’s happening,” the witch whispered. “Her first true shift.” Ivy collapsed to her knees, convulsing. Her scream shattered into sobs as her bones began to restructure. Skin rippled. Muscles tore and reformed. Her fingers elongated, nails thickening into obsidian claws. Rowan forced himself back to his feet. “Make it stop!” he roared. Mireya shook her head grimly. “You can’t.” Lightning split the sky. Thunder roared. Ivy’s body convulsed violently as fur erupted across her skin not the pale gray of omegas, but deep, shimmering silver streaked with black. Her spine curved. Her jaw elongated. Power detonated. The chamber walls cracked. The ceiling fractured. Rowan shielded his face as debris rained down. With a final, bone-shaking scream, Ivy’s human form shattered. A colossal wolf stood in her place. She towered nearly twice the height of an ordinary Alpha, her body forged of living moonlight and shadow. Silver runes burned across her massive limbs. Her eyes glowed ancient gold, swirling with galaxies of power. The air trembled. Every wolf in the palace dropped to their knees. Mireya bowed. Rowan stared in raw, stunned awe. “This… is her wolf?” he whispered. Mireya nodded reverently. “The form of a Queen.” The massive wolf lifted her head and howled. The sound ripped through the night, echoing across the mountains, across the forests, across the blood-soaked lands of ten territories. It was a call. A declaration. And a warning. Far beyond Blackwood’s borders, deep within cursed valleys and ancient ruins, other wolves lifted their heads. The Shadow Pack heard it. The Ancient Packs heard it. The Exiled heard it. A power long thought extinct had awakened. And the world answered. Ivy’s wolf staggered. The power pouring through her was too much. She slammed into the palace wall, claws gouging deep trenches through enchanted stone. Her body convulsed, muscles locking painfully. “She’s burning herself alive,” Rowan said hoarsely. Mireya raised her staff. “She needs an anchor. Someone she trusts.” Rowan didn’t hesitate. He stepped forward. The air crushed against him, pressure like a thousand storms colliding. His knees buckled. Blood trickled from his nose. “Ivy!” he shouted. The colossal wolf whipped her head toward him. Gold eyes locked onto his. Recognition flickered. Pain. Fear. Rowan forced himself closer, step by agonizing step. “I’m here,” he rasped. “I won’t leave you.” The wolf snarled. Power lashed outward, cracking pillars, shattering windows. Mireya screamed, “Rowan, stop! You’ll die!” “I already did,” he shouted back. “The moment I rejected her.” He dropped to his knees before the towering wolf. “Come back,” he whispered. “Please.” The massive creature trembled. Slowly, she lowered her head. Her breath gusted across him, hot and wild. He reached out. Placed his palm against her burning fur. Silver light surged. Pain exploded. Then Calm. The storm eased. Her glowing eyes dimmed from blinding gold to molten amber. Her massive body sagged. The air stilled. Light slowly retreated into her form as her wolf shrank, bones cracking once more, reshaping. Moments later, Ivy collapsed into Rowan’s arms, human once again. He caught her, cradling her trembling body against his chest. She sobbed silently. “I thought I was going to disappear,” she whispered. “Like I was being torn apart from the inside.” “You’re here,” he murmured. “You’re still here.” Mireya approached carefully, awe etched into every line of her face. “It is done,” she said softly. “Her wolf has chosen its form.” Rowan lifted his gaze. “Chosen?” Mireya nodded. “A wolf’s first true shift reveals its lineage. Hers confirms it beyond doubt.” He swallowed. “She’s a Queen.” “More than that,” Mireya replied. “She is a Sovereign.” Ivy stirred weakly. “What does that mean?” Mireya knelt before her. “It means,” she said gently, “that no Alpha can command you. No law can bind you. No crown can outrank you.” Ivy’s breath hitched. Rowan’s chest tightened painfully. “And it means,” Mireya continued, her voice darkening, “that every enemy in existence will either kneel… or try to destroy you.” A sudden chill swept through the shattered chamber. From beyond the palace, a distant, predatory presence brushed against their senses cold, ancient, watching. Mireya stiffened. “They’ve felt her shift,” she whispered. “The Shadow Pack knows.” Rowan tightened his hold around Ivy. Ivy’s fingers curled weakly into his shirt. “What happens now?” she asked. Mireya’s eyes lifted toward the blood-red moon. “Now,” she said grimly, “war begins.”
