Chapter 6

The chain felt cold and heavy around my wrist as the attendant pressed it into Princess Arwen’s hand. I stood there, blood still drying on my skin from the fight. My muscles practically screamed with each movement and even though I was completely silent my body drowned in extreme pain. I had done all of this, wasted seven months of my life just to be handed over as some present? It all started so normally. My family was of bloodline and was more than wealthy. Father was an Alpha Lord respected by many, including the king. At least until the misunderstanding that took everything away. My father was the only pack whose land could grow the moonflower fields. Even though he was a nice man with hundreds of friends, it also made him the target of many. Days were filled with training, laughter, and the kind of security I took for granted. Liam and I would spar in the courtyard while our little sister watched, giggling at our bruises. Nothing seemed wrong and never for a day did I ever think of our lives coming to an end. Then one night, while I was asleep, soldiers stormed the estate. Shouts woke me up just as the door was being smashed open. I barely had time to grab a dagger before they dragged us out. By the time we were forced into the grand hall, my father was already on his knees, his hands tied behind his back. The charges were lies. I knew it in my bones. He had done nothing wrong but nobody seemed to care. My mother's scream echoed through the building but the swords still dropped and my father was beheaded. My mother followed after and all we could do was watch. My sister… I don’t let myself think about what they did to her before they killed her. No matter how much I tried to forget her tear-streaked face never left my head. Liam and I were devastated. The execution destroyed everything overnight. We fled like rats, hiding in the shadows while our home burned behind us. Liam's pain slowly turned to rage and he wanted revenge even more than air. "You can't join the rogues. That was what got our father into this mess in the first place. You'd only give them more reason." Liam aggressively wiped his tears, glaring at me. "Don't tell me what to do. If you're not going to come with me then we are no longer brothers." His words took me by surprise and all I could do was stare. When he got no answer he picked himself and walked away. I wanted justice too, but I chose a different path. I was convinced Father had been framed. Someone powerful had arranged his death but I needed proof. So instead of running, I deliberately let myself get caught. I made sure the right people noticed me. Eventually, I was sold into slavery. Some said it was pure luck but it was merely the first step in getting justice. I knew the Vane family bought slaves regularly. Every month they came looking for strong workers and servants. So I waited. I made myself visible. Noticeable. When Elara started visiting the slave pens, I saw my chance. She was kind to me or at least she pretended to be. I was polite. Charming. I flirted gently, treated her like she was special. I let her think I would be a loyal, grateful servant. Every smile, every soft word was calculated. I needed her to choose me when the Vane family came shopping. Months passed and she grew more attached. She talked about how well I would be treated in the Vane household, how she would make sure I had a comfortable position. I played along perfectly. Everything was falling into place. Once inside their walls, I would search for documents, records, anything that proved my father’s innocence and exposed who had framed him. The memory shattered as the attendant finally handed the chain to Princess Arwen. I stared at her, my jaw tight. This wasn’t part of the plan. When Elara kept bidding higher and higher, I felt real relief. She was buying me for the Vane family. Exactly what I needed. Every raised number brought me closer to my goal. Then everything went to hell. Elara won. For one brief moment, I thought I had succeeded. Until she smiled that bright, fake smile and pointed at Arwen. “That’s your new master.” Panic flooded me. My carefully built plan — months of waiting, months of playing the perfect slave — lay in ruins. Instead of entering the Vane household where I could investigate, I was being sent to the royal palace. The risk was insane. If the king discovered who I really was, I could be executed on the spot. Everything I had worked for was destroyed in seconds. I watched Arwen take the chain. Her fingers closed around the metal. She looked as shocked as I felt. I didn’t understand why she was even here. Princesses didn’t come to slave markets. This wasn’t her world. The final insult came when Elara leaned in, still smiling like she had done me a favor. “He’s a gift,” she said sweetly. “For you, Arewen. After everything with Caspian… I thought this might cheer you up.” A gift. I was a f*****g gift. Bought to make the princess feel better after discovering her fiancé’s infidelity. Rage burned hot in my chest. My hands clenched into fists at my sides, the chains rattling. All those months of planning, of enduring the filth and humiliation of the slave pens, of charming Elara like a trained dog — all of it wasted. I wasn’t going to the Vane household. I wasn’t going to find the proof I needed. I was being handed over like a pretty toy to the very royal family connected to the people who destroyed mine. I kept my face neutral, but inside I was furious. My plan was shattered. Completely and utterly destroyed. And now I belonged to her.
