The Good Night Kiss

1074 Words
Quinn POV That night, Kael led me to a small clearing in the forest, where he set about tending to my injuries. He carefully examined each cut and bruise, cleaning them with a damp cloth and applying a healing salve he made from some wild herbs to help them mend. I had always felt safe and protected around him, and now that feeling was even stronger. I tried to start a conversation to break the silence. He seemed to be very skilled at treating wounds. Did he get hurt a lot during these years? “So...How have you been these years?” I asked. "Good." It seemed he didn't want to talk about his life in the five years, and "good" was the only word he said as he dabbed at a particularly deep cut on my arm. It hurt! "Ouch! Can't you be more gentle?" I complaint. He pursed his lips and didn't say anything. But I could feel that his movement became more gentle and careful. Okay, I guess he's still the Kael I know, no matter what he had been through. As he finished up, Kael wrapped a bandage around my arm and gave me a reassuring look. I flexed my arm, testing the tightness of the bandage. "Better," I said, feeling a sense of relief at the pain beginning to subside. After I had washed up, Kael built a small fire and brought a cup of hot water for me. "Drink it." he said. I took the cup made from something of leather or tree bark. It had a bit of a weird smell but it was so warm. We were both silent for a few minutes, lost in their own thoughts, until I finally spoke up. "I think we need a plan," I said, looking at Kael. "I'm tired of running around and wandering around aimlessly. We need to figure out what we're going to do next. Besides, we killed Ellie." "I killed Ellie." Kael corrected. “There is no difference.” I ignored his correction. "Ellie is connected to the witches." He said, "So is you losing your wolf." "The witches?" I frowned. My heart sank at the mention of witches. I had always been afraid of them, and the thought of having to deal with them now was daunting, "Are you suggesting that Ellie has something to do with me losing my wolf in the war 5 years ago?" He nodded,"There were similar traces of magic. Witch magic." My eyes widened with disbelief. I could never forgot the war 5 years ago caused by witches! "Does Mathew know about it? Ah...shit! Damn Mathew! How dare he!" I gritted my teeth. How could he not know? He must have known it and he must be on it too! "I won't just give away my father's pack to that asshole." I said, determination in my voice. "I'll find out the truth, and then I will make them pay for what they've done." "You can't do it alone." Kael reminded me as I indulged myself in anger towards Matthew and the pack elders who betrayed me. "You're right. I can't do it alone. I need help. But...I'm all alone now. No one in the Red Cove pack supports me anymore, they're all listening to Matthew now." "Silver Moon Pack." Kael said. Silver Moon Pack? I thought about it carefully and finally nodded, knowing he was right. When my father was still alive, Silver Moon pack was our biggest ally. It's also one of the strongest packs, much stronger than the Red Cove pack. They might be willing to help me. "That's a good plan. I'll go." I said. "I'll need all the help we can get to take on the Red Cove pack." I looked at Kael, a sense of gratitude washing over me. For the first time in the five years, someone was really thinking for me and giving me sincere suggestions. I had missed him so much, and now that he was back, I felt like I could take on anything. "But... Kael..." I hesitated when I suddenly thought about his plan - what if he has something more important to do? What if he isn't going with me? "I...uh...What about you? What's your plan next?" I stared at his face, secretly hoping that he'd offer to help me and stay by me. "I'll go with you." He lightly smiled, and stroked my hair. But just in one second, he immediately regained his poker face and withdrew his hand as if he suddenly thought of something. "Thank you," I said, letting out a deep breath, "God! You know how scared I was just thinking of you wouldn't be together with me. Kael, I don't think I could do this without you." He lowered his head, I couldn't see the expression on his face. We both sat there in silence for a few moments, watching the flames dance in the fire. I felt a sense of hope and determination rising within me. I knew that the road ahead would be difficult, but with Kael by my side, I suddenly felt that I was ready to face whatever came my way. "You should rest." Kael said after a long time, breaking the silence. I nodded in agreement, feeling the exhaustion of the past few days catching up to me. "We have a long journey ahead of us." I yawned. "You should sleep now." He cleared up a space beside the fire and asked me to sleep there. I lay down and he quickly wrapped his cloak around me, as if it was a blanket. I could feel the warmth of the fire, feel Kael's presence beside me, and feel his temperature through his cloak. "Kael..." I felt the uncomfortable ground under my already sore body and looked at him, "would you kiss my forehead and say good night to me, like my father used to do?" "No, you're not a child anymore." He frowned and rejected my request without any hesitation, "You're a grown up woman now." "Fine." I sighed in disappointment and closed my eyes, trying to adjust my body to get used to the ground. But after a short while, just as I was about to fall asleep, I heard a slight sound coming towards me, and the next moment, I felt his soft lips touching my forehead. “Good night.” I heard his tender voice whispering.
