Chapter 5 - Poison and Power

326 Words
The glittering chandelier spilled fractured light over the room, but the sparkle did nothing to mask the tension beneath the surface. I stood by the bar, feeling like an intruder in a world I once knew too well—and now needed to conquer. The gala was in full swing, held at one of the city’s grandest hotels, where Daniel’s new fiancée was the center of attention. She wore my favorite shade of red lipstick—the same color I used to wear before betrayal rewrote every rule I lived by. Her laugh floated across the room, sweet and careless, a dagger twisting in my gut. Luca was beside me, his voice low enough only I could hear. “She’s untouchable tonight,” he said, his eyes scanning the crowd like a hawk. “Everyone’s watching her, everyone’s protecting her.” But I wasn’t here to watch. I was here to act. “Who do we start with?” I asked, my voice steady, though my heart hammered like a drum in my chest. He handed me a small card with a name scrawled on it. “The woman closest to Daniel’s empire. She’s the weak link.” I studied the woman—a polished socialite with sharp eyes and a reputation for loose lips. Perfect. I moved through the crowd like a shadow, smiling sweet and harmless, while my mind mapped every detail, every potential weapon. Luca followed closely, his presence a steady anchor in the swirling chaos. When our eyes met across the room, his gaze said one thing: This is just the beginning. I approached the socialite with a practiced grace, engaging her in light conversation that quickly turned pointed. Secrets slipped from her like wine from a glass—careless, potent, dangerous. The night grew heavier with every whispered truth. By the time the orchestra struck up a slow, sultry tune, I had what I came for. And I wasn’t done yet.
