The Tank.

The tank hummed. Not the clean hum of a machine. A wet hum, like a throat trying to breathe through a mouthful of blood. The dark red liquid inside moved slow, lit from within by a dull biolight that pulsed out of sync with anything human. And in it, floating, black hair fanned with silver her mother. Maeve Quinn opened her eyes. They were solid silver-white, no pupil, no iris, and she looked straight at Elara. Elara's knees went. Kieran caught her before she hit the glass-strewn floor, one arm iron around her waist, the other hand still holding Lyra's wrist where he'd been checking her pulse. He tried to block the tank with his body but Elara could still see it over his shoulder. You don't stop seeing your mother in a jar after ten years of visiting an empty grave. "Don't look," he murmured against her hair, low. Blood from his own temple had dried in a dark track down to his collar. "Look at me. Just me." She couldn't. Past his shoulder, Maeve's hand was pressed to the glass from the inside. Small, scarred. The crescent scar on the left wrist was identical to Elara's own. Her nails were gone, fingertips raw. The man in the white coat stepped forward. Thin. Silver hair neatly combed, pale grey eyes behind rimless glasses, a pleasant smile that didn't touch them. The black medical case in his hand hummed with the same wet pulse as the tank. "Hello, girls," he said. "I'm Dr. Silas Kane. Your father. I think it's time we had a family dinner." Lena made a sound like she'd been punched low in the stomach. Jace's arms tightened around her as she sagged against him. Darius went rigid. "Father, you weren't supposed to" "I wasn't supposed to let an asset destroy sixty floors of Wolfe Tower with a tantrum," Silas said without looking at his son. His voice was mild, Midwestern, a professor correcting a minor error on a test. "Containment breach. White howl at four years old. Do you have any idea what that does to the valuation? Project Luna just became priceless." He set the medical case down on the glass coffee table and clicked the latches. Inside, rows of vials, syringes, and a small black device that pulsed in time with the tank. Elara found her voice. It scraped coming out. "Get her out of that." Silas looked at her, really looked, his head tilting the way a buyer tilts to appraise livestock. Grey eyes flicked to her throat where Kieran's oil still glinted, to Lyra half-asleep in Kieran's arm, to Elara's left wrist and that same crescent scar. "You look like her," he said, almost fond. "Before. When she still fought. Before the tank made her agreeable." A low growl started in Kieran's chest, rattling the medical case. Silas glanced at him, unimpressed. "Mr. Wolfe. Your mother was lovely too. Irina. She screamed beautifully when we" He didn't finish. No one saw Kieran put Lyra down. One second she was against his chest, the next she was tucked into Elara's arms, and Kieran's hand was around Silas's throat, slamming the older man into the wall beside the tank. The medical case crashed onto its side. Enforcers raised their batons. Sasha raised her gun. Darius shouted, "Don't! Don't you dare" Silas didn't struggle. He smiled even as Kieran's claws pricked the thin skin, blood beading black in the low light. "Do it," he whispered, eyes watering but bright. "Kill me in front of Council witnesses during an active Impossible Claim. You forfeit your life, your pack, your fortune, and your mate and child become property of Kane Industries by default clause. Page four. You did read the contract you staked your life on, didn't you?" Kieran's hand shook. Not from weakness. From the effort of not closing his fist. Elara stepped forward, Lyra clutched to her chest, glass crunching under her bare feet. She didn't grab him. She put her hand on his forearm, where the tendons stood like cables under skin. "Kieran," she said, quiet. "He wants you to." His eyes flicked to her, ice-blue blown wide, wolf right at the surface. He breathed hard through his teeth. "He put her in a tank," he said, like she didn't know. Like saying it would make it make sense. "I know." Her thumb brushed his wrist, once. "We get her out. Not like this." For a long beat, only the tank hummed and rain came through the broken wall. Kieran let go. Silas dropped, coughing, straightening his coat as if he'd just been jostled in a crowd, that smile coming back like it had never left. He touched his throat where blood beaded, looked at it, interested. "Prime blood," he said. "You bleed just like her. All that power and same mess inside." He turned to the tank, placed his palm on the glass. Maeve inside didn't react to him. Her eyes stayed locked on Elara. "Maeve, darling, look. Our daughters. Both together. Elara and Lena. You said this day would never come." Maeve's mouth moved inside the liquid, but there were no bubbles, as if the liquid wasn't liquid at all. No sound came through. Elena, who had been pressed against the wall holding her medical bag, whispered, "She's conscious in there. She's awake." "She's been awake for ten years," Lena said. Her voice was hollow from the floor where Jace had let her sink, knees to her chest, lab coat soaked. "They wake her to take blood. Then they put her back under. She dreams about Elara. About the yellow bicycle she never got to give her." Silas tapped the glass, affectionate, the way you'd tap a fishbowl. "Project Luna started with her. White Line females produce marrow that suppresses early Prime shift. One White female can stabilize fifty pups who would otherwise die screaming at four. Do you know how much a dying Prime pup costs a pack? Do you know what a cure is worth?" He looked at Lyra, who stared at the tank now, not scared, curious, her head tilted exactly the way Maeve's was. "Your daughter is the earliest white howl on record. Four years, two months. That means her marrow is even more potent than Maeve's. She will save hundreds. She will make Kane Industries immortal." "She is four," Elara said. The words broke in the middle. She held Lyra tighter, as if she could press her back inside her body where it was safe. "She is four years old." "And already worth more than you ever were," Silas said pleasantly. "That's why we kept you both alive. Insurance. Inventory." Both. The word snagged. Lena looked up, eyes red and raw. "Tell her about the second twin." Silas's pleasant mask slipped, just a fraction. Annoyance flickered. "Ah. Irina's fairy tales. She always talked too much. That's why she ended up in the river." Sasha's gun clicked as she thumbed the safety off. Silas ignored it and turned to Elara, hands behind his back, lecturer again. "White Line doesn't have one child. They have two. Always two. One dominant, one recessive. One to be seen, one to be stored for parts. Your mother had you and Lena. But she was greedy. She hid a third sac on the first ultrasound. Vanishing twin? No. Absorbed twin. Except not absorbed. Transferred." Elara's arms tightened around Lyra until Lyra squirmed and made a small noise. "What are you saying?" Kieran asked, voice low. Silas smiled at Lyra. "I'm saying Lyra isn't alone in there. When Maeve went into the tank, she was already pregnant with her second set. Stress induced superfetation. One sac survived. One didn't. Or rather, one survived inside the other. Look at the mark." He pointed at Lyra's chest, where the silver bite was still glowing faintly through her pajamas — four punctures now ringed with a fainter second ring, like smaller teeth inside the larger ones. "That's not a bite," Silas said. "That's a twin trying to get out. Chimeric twin. White Line trait. Second twin absorbed into the first, but still there, dormant. Until a white howl wakes it. Your daughter has a sister inside her, Elara. Just like you did." The room tilted. Elara looked down at Lyra, who looked up at her, eyes blue again, confused, small hand scratching at the glowing mark. "Mama, it itches," Lyra whispered. Lena crawled forward on glass-cut knees, blood spotting the floor, and reached for Lyra's hand. "Don't" Elara flinched back instinctively. "Let me," Lena said, tears streaming. "I had it too. Inside. Mom taught me how to quiet her. Before they cut her out of me." Cut her out. Elara stared at Lena's belly, flat under the damp lab coat. When the coat shifted, a ladder of old white scars showed along her side, thin and terrible. "They took mine when I was eight," Lena said softly, not to Elara, to Lyra. "It hurt. But then it went quiet. I can help her be quiet. I know how." Kieran knelt beside Elara, large hand covering Lyra's small one where it rested on the mark. His other hand cupped Elara's cheek and forced her to look at him, not the tank, not Silas. "Breathe," he murmured, thumb brushing her cheekbone, wiping away rain and ash and what were definitely tears. "Look at me. Only me. Breathe." Elara breathed. It hitched. "We get them out," he said, low, for her only, so close his breath warmed her mouth. "Both of them. Maeve and Lyra's, whatever it is. We get them out of this building. Tonight. Do you trust me?" She wanted to say no. She wanted to say she trusted no one who had ever said he'd protect her. But Lyra's hand was fisted in his sleeve again, and her mother's eyes in the tank hadn't left hers, and the oil on her throat smelled like the only home she'd ever wanted. "Yes," she whispered. Kieran's eyes closed, just for a second, relief breaking through the rage. He stood, turning to Silas, to Darius, to the enforcers, blood still on his face, glass in his hair, mate's oil on his throat, daughter's hand in his. And he smiled. There was no kindness in it at all. "You heard the Impossible Claim," he said to the enforcers, voice carrying despite the rain. "The female is my fated mate. The offspring is mine. Under Prime law, no medical procedure on either without Alpha mate consent. You touch the child, you challenge me. Do you challenge?" The enforcers looked at each other. Looked at the tank. Looked at Silas. Silas sighed, as if bored with a game that had gone on too long. "Kieran, dear boy, you don't understand. I own the Council. I own the order. I" The tank cracked. A hairline fracture, from the inside, right where Maeve's hand pressed. Dark red liquid seeped, hissing where it hit the wood floor, eating the finish. Maeve's eyes, solid white, snapped from Elara to Silas. Her mouth opened inside the liquid, and though no sound should carry through glass and fluid, a word did, clear as if spoken right into Elara's head, into Lena's, into Lyra's. Three voices layered over each other. Maeve, Elara, Lyra. Same voice, different ages. "ENOUGH." The tank exploded. Not like the windows earlier. Like a bomb red liquid and glass and light, and in the center of it Maeve Quinn fell forward out of the wreckage, naked, soaked, silver hair to her waist, feet not touching the floor, and she was not weak. She was burning from the inside out. Silas stumbled back, his face finally showing real fear, shouting, "Containment! Containment! She was sedated! She was sedated!" Maeve turned her head slowly. Looked at Silas, at Darius, at the enforcers, at Lena on the floor, at Elara holding Lyra, who now floated an inch off the floor too, mark blazing white to match hers. Maeve smiled, and it was a terrible thing, beautiful and ruined, and she said in a voice that was not one voice but many all the, White Line women at once, layered. "You took my daughters. Now I take yours." She raised a hand, and Darius, who had backed toward the elevator, screamed as silver light shot from her palm and hit his chest, lifting him off his feet. Lyra, still floating in Elara's arms, mirrored her exactly, tiny hand raising, white light shooting from her palm too, hitting the same spot on Darius. Darius's eyes rolled white. Two White Alphas. Mother and great-granddaughter, striking the same target. Behind them, Lena clutched her belly where the old scars laddered and screamed, and silver light burst from her scars too, hitting the black medical case, which exploded open. Inside, something small and wet and glowing writhed, trying to breathe, trying to cry. Second twin. Not absorbed. Stored. And it had Elara's face.
