The Mark.

he woman in the glass didn't blink. Elara stared at her own reflection and at the second face layered behind it, faint as breath on glass. Her reflection bare feet, sweatpants too long, Blackwood t-shirt slipping off one shoulder was pale, eyes still flashing silver after Darius. Behind it, an older woman with the same cheekbones, same grey eyes, silver shot through black hair that looked like it had been cut with a knife. Hand pressed to the other side of the pane. Maeve Quinn. Ten years dead. Her lips moved. One word. No sound. RUN. Rain slid down the outside of the sixtieth-floor window and the face dissolved, leaving only Elara and city lights. Behind her, Kieran inhaled sharply. "Step away from the glass." Low, not loud, but it cut. Elara didn't move. Her palm was still closed around the black keycard Lyra had pulled from her pajama pocket. B7 embossed. The vial taped to it knocked cold against her skin. M. QUINN - PRIME WHITE - DAY 3642. 3642 days. Ten years minus eight days since they told her rogues tore her mother apart. "She was here," Elara whispered. Her throat tasted like metal. "She was right here." Sasha killed the bedroom lights. "Don't. She comes in the dark. My mother said White Line women step between glass when they're bleeding." "Turn them back on," Kieran snapped. The lights snapped back. Sasha's gun hand shook. On the bed, Lyra made a small sound in Elena's lap, still asleep, fever-sweat darkening her hair. Elena held her, eyes huge, human and out of her depth and refusing to show it. "Okay," Elena said, too fast. "Okay, human doctor here. Keycard needs bagging. Blood needs refrigeration. And a child needs a hospital that isn't haunted." "It's not haunted," Jace said from the torn closet where he'd pulled the paneling off the maintenance shaft. His flashlight cut through dust. "It's a service shaft. Sealed in '98. Connects to the old bunker under Wolfe Tower. Only family had the plans." He tilted the light. Handprints in the dust. Small. Fresh. And a white gold chain, broken, glinting on the shaft floor, tarnished silver disc beside it. The second bracelet. Irina's. Kieran crouched, picked it up with his knuckle. His mother's bracelet. The one that should have been in the vault three floors down. "Someone was in the walls," Sasha breathed. "Someone is still in the building," Kieran said. He stood, turned the bracelet over. Inside, the engraving: Irina Volkov, same as Lyra's. He looked at Elara. At the vial in her hand. "B7," he said. "Kane Industries sublevels. B1 to B6 are pharma labs. B7 is off-books. Black site. My mother was held there fourteen days before they put her in the river." Elara's fingers closed so tight around the vial the plastic creaked. "My mother is in B7." "Darius wants you to think that," Kieran said. He stepped closer, close enough she could smell cedar smoke and rain on him, close enough his heat cut through the chill. "He left a bracelet where Lyra would find it. Left a keycard in her pocket. Filed a Council summons for noon tomorrow, mandatory appearance, mother and unregistered female offspring, failure punishable by death. He wants you running into Kane Tower tonight with no warrant, so he can shoot you as a trespasser during the claim period. Council law allows it." The logic landed clean. It didn't matter. "She's my mother." "And she is my mate's mother," he said, and the word mate hung in the air, heavy. "I will burn B7 to the ground tomorrow with Council observers, cameras, ten lawyers. Not tonight alone." Elara laughed. The sound scraped. "You think law matters to them? They kept her ten years." Kieran's jaw worked. He looked at the vial, at the keycard, at Lyra. "I counted," he said suddenly, voice low, only for her. "Every pharmacy log. Fourteen hundred and thirty-seven days you took wolfsbane. Fourteen hundred and thirty-seven days you made yourself sick so you wouldn't have to smell me. I thought you were safer without me. I was wrong every single day." His hand hovered near her cheek, not touching. Asking. Elena cleared her throat, loud. "If that is Maeve's blood, it's evidence of false imprisonment, not a rescue coupon. If the Council wants Lyra tomorrow, you need to present her as already protected. Not as a feral unregistered Prime pup." Sasha caught on instantly. "Scent claim. Temporary. Oil. Council respects throat." Elara looked at Kieran. At his mouth, then away. "What does that mean?" "It means I mark residence," Kieran said, each word careful. "My scent on the door, on you. Wrists is enough. Throat is stronger. It washes off in three days. It tells other Alphas that touching you is a challenge to a Blackwood Prime. It keeps Darius from putting hands on you tomorrow when he tries to drag you to an altar." Tension snapped taut. Elena's eyebrows went up. Jace suddenly found the shaft very interesting. Elara thought of Darius's fingers an inch from her cheek in the Glass House. Of the Beta calling her Mrs. Kane. She lifted her chin. The borrowed shirt slipped further, exposing the long line of her throat, pulse hammering visibly. She was shaking and didn't care if he saw. "Do it." Kieran blinked, like he was surprised she hadn't said no. "Are you sure?" "No. Do it anyway." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black bottle, no label. Prime oil, concentrated, private stock. He tipped it. One clear bead welled on his fingertip. The scent hit her even from a foot away cedar and snow and blood and male, amplified until her knees softened. He stepped in, one hand at her waist to steady her, other fingertip hovering over the hollow of her throat. "Cold," he warned. The oil touched. Cold, then fire that sank under her skin. Elara gasped, back arching before she could stop it. Her wolf, dormant for four years thanks to Kane pills, surged up with a howl that vibrated her teeth, not her ears. Silver flooded her vision. Kieran's hand tightened on her waist, holding her upright. His thumb traced a slow circle over her pulse, spreading the scent. His forehead almost touched hers. Breathing ragged. "Mine," he breathed, before he could stop himself. Then, broken, softer, "You smell like mine again." Elara's fists caught in his damp shirt. Not pushing. Holding. Her forehead tipped forward until it rested against his jaw. Stubble rasped her skin. His purr started, deep, vibrating through his chest into hers. For three seconds the penthouse fell away. Council, B7, blood, bracelets. Only his hand on her throat, her pulse hammering against his fingertip, matching his. Sasha made a small, choked noise. Kieran froze. Realized. Started to pull back. Elara's hands tightened. "Don't," she whispered. He didn't. His fingertip lingered, oil glinting on her throat like a second skin. On the bed, Lyra sat bolt upright. Eyes open, but not awake. Glowing faint ice-blue, same as Kieran's wolf. She stared straight ahead and spoke in a clear, adult woman's voice that wasn't hers, not a child's voice at all. "Don't trust sister. She wears my face but not my heart. B7 is trap. They took second twin. They—" Lyra seized. Elara screamed and lunged, Kieran with her, but Elena was faster, rolling Lyra onto her side, one hand on her wrist timing it. "Febrile! Fever too high, she's" Elena's voice cracked but her hands stayed steady. Lyra convulsed once, twice, then went limp, breathing fast and shallow. Sweat soaked her dinosaur pajamas. And on her small chest, where the top had ridden up, a mark bloomed fresh, as if brushed by invisible teeth. Four punctures, silvery, too large for a human mouth, too precise for an accident. Not a bruise. A claiming bite. Still weeping a bead of blood. On a four-year-old. Sasha saw it and went white. "That's impossible," she whispered. "Prime males can't mark pups. Only a Prime female. Only a White Alpha can claim a pup that isn't hers." Kieran's voice was dead quiet. "Only a White Alpha mother." Elara stared at the mark, at Lyra's pale face, at the keycard B7 still in Kieran's other hand. Lyra's eyes fluttered open, the glow gone, confused and scared, tears spilling. "Mama," she whispered. "Why does Lena say she is me? Why does she want my name?" Elena's head snapped up. "Lena? Who is Lena?" The main penthouse elevator dinged. Jace swore, gun up. "Locked! I locked it!" No one should get up without biometrics. Voice. Palm. A woman's laugh, soft, identical to Elara's laugh but with an edge that didn't belong, came from the living room. "Knock knock, sister," the voice called, light, amused. "Did you miss me?" Lyra went rigid in Elara's arms and whispered, "That's not Mama. That's the lady from the wall." Kieran stepped in front of the bed, body blocking them, shoulders rising, canines dropping, eyes pure wolf-blue. From the doorway, a woman stepped into the light. Same face as Elara. Same raven hair, same grey eyes. But the smile was wrong. Eyes dead. She wore a white Kane Industries lab coat over a black dress. Around her throat, the second Irina bracelet glinted, new and polished. In her hand, a syringe filled with dark red liquid, and a Council order paper. "Hi, Kieran," she said to him, ignoring Elara. "You must be the brother-in-law. I'm Lena Quinn. Mom's favorite. And I brought a present for my niece." She looked down at Lyra and smiled. "Time to come home, little wolf."
