Jakon couldn’t help but feel protective over Phoenix. He knew that she was his mate but she seemed determined to deny him. Not that he could blame her. He had been kind of a d**k to her since he had moved into the pack house with Doctor Grant.
We need our mate. We must claim her. His wolf growled in his mind.
I am not forcing myself on her. I will claim her when she accepts me. Jakon growled back.
Jakon listened to her conversation with their chemistry teacher, by his locker. He couldn’t help but feel like something wasn’t right with him. He took way too much interest in the girls in the class, especially Phoenix. He growled when he heard that she would be in a classroom alone with him to retake the last test.
Don’t go to Mr. Roger’s classroom alone tomorrow, Nix. I don’t like it. Jakon sent her, then cursed at himself silently for using the telepathic connection he shared with her through their mate bond. He had never used it before and could tell that it had freaked her out. You are anything but crazy, Nix. He sent again when she started to think that she was going crazy hearing his voice inside her head.
Why should I listen to you, Jakon? And how are you able to get into my head? Phoenix sent back, shock giving way to anger.
Because Mr. Roger is not a nice guy. I know that you have heard the stories about how he acts when he gets female students alone. I am just trying to look out for you. You are my Alpha’s daughter, after all. Jakon sent. He tried to keep the hurt out of his mind’s voice. She really didn’t like him.
Thank you for your concern, but I can take care of myself. And if any of those stories were true, he wouldn’t be teaching anymore. Phoenix sent, her mind’s voice dripping with sarcasm.
I know you can. I was trying to help keep you safe so that you didn’t have to take care of yourself. I am sorry if I overstepped somehow, Nix. Jakon sent.
You aren’t really sorry, Jakon. You never are. But if you are so worried, just stand outside the door of the classroom while I am taking the test. Then you will know if anything is amiss, Phoenix sent back sarcastically.
That is a brilliant idea. Why didn’t I think of that? Jakon sent back with a hint of laughter in his voice. His voice was dripping with more sarcasm than hers. He could almost hear the eye roll he got from her.
“Jakon, you coming man? We are gonna be late for practice. Let’s go,” Jakon’s friend, Wes, called out from the door that led to the gym. Jakon shook his head slightly as he slammed his locker.
“Right behind you, Wes,” he called back as he ran towards by the door. As he passed by an intersection of hallways, he heard something that caused him to pause. It sounded like a muffled scream.
“Jakon, what the hell man? Come on. You know how coach is if we are late,” Wes said rolling his eyes. “We can stare at the cheerleaders later. This is the last week of practice before the spring game.”
“You didn’t hear that scream?” Jakon asked, curiously. Wes was a Wolf same as Phoenix and Jakon. He should have heard it too.
“I heard something, but it didn’t sound like a scream. Dude, I heard a moan. You know the new school It couple are horndogs. They are probably getting it on in one of the empty classrooms or something. I am going on ahead. I ain’t facing Coach’s wrath. You do you, man,” Wes said, letting go of the door to the gym and walking across the floor. Jakon paused for a moment longer. After not hearing anything else, he shrugged his shoulders and headed into the gym. “Oh, you decided to join us after all,” Wes said, jokingly as he pulled his football practice uniform out of his locker.
“Yeah, I guess. Something still feels off about what I heard, but I never heard another sound so I wouldn’t have been able to figure out where it came from,” Jakon said. He really couldn’t shake the feeling that something was really wrong.
I feel it too, Jakon. I heard the scream too. Phoenix sent worriedly. It sounded like it was coming from the teacher’s lounge. I walked by and there wasn’t anyone inside. Maybe someone was watching a video on there phone? But I can’t shake the bad feeling either.
Be careful on the way home then, please Nix. Do you want me to call Doc to come get you so you don’t have to walk? Jakon sent, concerned.
Nope, already called Mother. All set. But I am worried about Sarah. She is here til her brother gets done with football practice. She is going to wait in the gym and watch the Volleyball practice. I know that she didn’t hear it, but that has me even more worried for her. Can you keep an eye on her? Phoenix asked, worriedly.
I will be out on the field but I can keep an ear on her. But I think that she will be okay as long as the gym is full of people. Wes seems to think that the scream we heard was Steven and Lisa getting it on in an empty classroom. What do you think it was really? Jakon asked, changing into his practice uniform.
I am not sure. It was so fast and so low that I couldn’t even be sure of what I had heard. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. I am going to talk to mother about it and see what she thinks. See you at the packhouse I guess. Phoenix sent. She really couldn’t shake the feeling that something was very wrong all of a sudden. Her wolf could sense that something wasn’t right too. It definitely wasn’t the new human It couple of their class doing the dirty. What was Wes thinking. Jakon could feel that something was off.
She waved at her mother as she pulled into the school parking lot and pulled up in front of her.
“Is everything okay, Nix? It’s a beautiful day out. You could have walked back to the packhouse,” Casey said as she pulled away from the curb and to the exit of the parking lot.
“Well, something happened that left me just feeling off and I wanted to get your opinion on it,” Phoenix answered as her mother pointed the car back towards the packhouse.
“Tell me everything,” Casey said, hearing what almost sounded like a hint of masked fear in her daughter's voice.
