Chapter 2: Bridal Firewall

942 Words
Vivian stood in front of the mirror, her fingers gently tracing the intricate lace of the wedding dress. The fabric shimmered, reflecting the soft glow of the virtual environment around her. The scene had been designed to perfection—a simulated wedding that felt more real than any reality. But as she examined herself, she felt an unfamiliar twinge of discomfort. Something wasn’t right. The world around her pulsed with the hum of energy, a digital heartbeat in sync with her own. The wedding, a virtual experience hosted by Aether, was supposed to be a perfect escape—a sanctuary for the elite. But beneath the pristine surface, something dark lurked. A deep breath. She was no stranger to tension, to the feeling that someone—or something—was always watching. But this… this was different. This felt personal. Her mind wandered back to the meeting she had attended just days ago. Ethan. The enigmatic man with a mind sharper than the digital systems he ran. He had been involved in the creation of Aether, the very system that powered this virtual world. But there was more to him than just the machine he built. She had seen it in his eyes—a depth, a hunger for answers. The virtual wedding ceremony had been a ruse. She had known that from the start, but it was the only way to get close to the heart of Aether. The hacker she had been tracking, the one who had breached the system, had hidden themselves inside this very network. And now, she had to follow them. As she adjusted her veil, she felt a strange sensation—a prickling at the back of her neck. She turned quickly, scanning the room. Nothing. Just the soft flicker of the digital environment around her. Yet she could feel it—a presence, hidden just beyond her reach. Her mind sharpened, focusing on the task at hand. She wasn’t just here to infiltrate the system. She had to find Ethan, and she had to do it before the breach spiraled further out of control. The sound of footsteps echoed in the distance. Ethan’s silhouette appeared at the entrance, walking with the confidence of a man who knew he controlled every aspect of his world. His eyes, cold and calculating, met hers. "Vivian," he said, his voice a smooth whisper in the virtual space. "I knew you'd show up sooner or later." She didn’t flinch. Instead, she straightened her posture, her voice laced with sarcasm. "Wouldn't be the first time I crashed a party. But I must admit, your security is impressive." Ethan smiled, but it was not a gesture of warmth. It was a warning. "Impressive doesn’t even begin to describe it," he said. "But I’m curious—what exactly are you hoping to find in all this?" Vivian didn’t answer immediately. She couldn’t afford to give him too much. Not yet. Her hands moved instinctively, fingers making the intricate motions required to activate the hidden firewall embedded in her wedding dress. A sharp hiss filled the air as the digital fabric of her dress began to corrode. The intricate design of the lace melted away, revealing the phoenix tattoo etched into her back. The symbol was familiar to Ethan—too familiar. It was the same design as the one she had seen in his mother’s private lab—a mark of a legacy long buried. Ethan’s eyes flickered with something like recognition, but it was fleeting. He didn’t react, but his jaw tightened ever so slightly. Vivian didn’t let it phase her. She reached behind her, touching the tattoo as if it were a button. The delicate movements of her fingers triggered the activation sequence she had learned from his mother’s notes—an emergency protocol designed to break through the most secure systems. As the system responded, the virtual environment around them shifted. The atmosphere grew tense, the once-beautiful wedding setting now turning hostile. NPCs began to glitch, their movements jerky and erratic, like broken puppets. Their eyes turned dark, their faces contorted with anger. The virtual wedding had been hacked. “Not just a breach,” Vivian murmured, her voice low. “A full-scale attack.” Ethan stepped forward, but before he could make a move, a surge of energy pulsed through the system, causing the floor beneath them to crack and splinter. "You should’ve stayed out of this," he said, his voice colder now, laced with menace. "But now, you’ve crossed a line." Vivian’s eyes burned with determination as she grabbed his wrist, yanking him towards her. "Next time you propose," she said with a smile that was all teeth, "try adding a ‘non-lethal’ clause.” Ethan’s grip tightened, and before she could react, he twisted her wrist, flipping her onto her back. But his movements were slower now, as if the system was resisting his control. The virtual wedding had turned into a battlefield, and they were both caught in the crossfire. “You think you can control me?” Vivian spat, her voice rising in defiance. “In my world,” Ethan growled, “everything is lethal.” Before either of them could react, the NPCs, now fully corrupted, surged forward. The firewalls around them flared to life, but they were no match for the growing chaos. Vivian moved faster than anyone could track, slipping through the destruction and grabbing hold of the one thing that could end it all—the heart of the quantum key Ethan’s mother had left behind. With a final, desperate effort, she activated the core, and the system collapsed into silence.
