Chapter 5

[Tyler PoV] Her scent hit me like a freight train. I looked up just as she was walking in, Natalie and Jake trailing behind her; hand in hand. That didn't take long. When Jake told me that Natalie was his mate, I was instantly accepting of her. It's why I chose him to be my driver last night instead of my normal one. Being my Beta, Jake wasn't used to playing chauffer, but he was willing if it meant he would get to know her. He was even more willing this morning when I told him we were all meeting for coffee. What shocked me most was when Natalie told me she also knew she was his mate. Apparently Natalie was a witch, genetics handed down from distant ancestors. It had skipped her parents and grandparents. The funny thing about witches was the fact they smelled like humans, which explained Marcus' reaction to her and Alexis. Made me wonder if Alexis was actually not human. I stood to pull a seat for Alexis, next to me instead of across so that Jake and Natalie could stay holding hands. She stood next to it for a second, unsure, possibly contemplating if it was a good idea, and sat. I followed suit and pushed her drink to her. "Natalie said you like strawberries, so I ordered you a Fruit Tonic. There's also French toast coming to the table soon for all of us." I told her. Her gaze flicked from me to the drink and back to me. "You didn't have to. I could've ordered for myself. Truthfully I don't really like coffee." She tilted the glass to her lips and sipped the liquid. "Ohhh, this is good." I reached forward and swiped a dribble from the corner of her lip with my thumb, then took a chance and licked it. Her eyes widened and she looked at Natalie. "Girl, you do your own thing. I'm here for emotional support when the big talk starts." I shot her a glare. "What?" "Well.." I cleared my throat. "I would like a chance to get to know you. I know it may seem slightly far-fetched, but you caught my interest last night and I'd like to see if there's more to you." "Um. Ok?" She c****d her head to the side. "I'm an artist. I don't drink coffee. I guess I already told you I was dumped last night. That's it." "But are you... Human?" "Why would you be asking if I was human? Of course I'm human! What else could I be?" Her nose scrunched and the lines in her forehead began to show. I could hear her heartbeat start to race. She was worried; scared even. "Lexxy, girl, I know you're human. The thing is we," Natalie pointed to herself, Jake, and I, "are not." Alexis blinked a few times then broke out in laughter. "Oh s*it! You had me going! That was good. What is this? A freak out Alexis date to punish me for embarrassing myself? I could understand from two strangers, but not you Natty. I think it's time I go." Alexis shot back the rest of her drink, grabbed her purse, and stood to leave. I grabbed her hand and pulled her back into me. She landed right on my thigh and a stronger jolt than last night went through me. "Lexxy, please. You know I wouldn't crack a joke like this. I'm a witch. Tyler and Jacob are wolves. Alpha and Beta, actually. You're... You're his mate. His Luna." Alexis wrenched her hand free from mine and stood. She shot us all a hard glare and stormed out of the building. I slumped back in my seat and just looked at Jake and Natalie, feeling completely defeated. At the absolute worst moment, a waiter walked up and set our meals in front of us. [Alexis PoV] The nerve of them! I was already in a fragile state after Brent's bullshit. Why would they mess with my head like that? And Natty of all people joined them? I guess the Jacob guy was kind of cute. He had blue eyes that matched hers, dirty blonde hair, an earring, some facial hair, and a nice build. But just because she was getting some d*ck didn't mean she had a right to join their horrible jokes. I walked for about ten minutes before I sat at a nearby bench. Should I hail a taxi or order a Lyft? Both would cost so much. Unfortunately I couldn't do anything because a black car pulled up and Natty's head popped out of the window. "Common, girl. Get in. Let's talk about this. Please?" I got up and started walking again. The car slowly followed with Natty pleading with me to get in. She was lucky my feet were starting to hurt. I stopped and slumped over, getting in when the backdoor opened. Tyler was sitting on the other side of the car and staring at me as if I'd hurt him in some way. "Alright. Talk." I sneered. He frowned and leaned his head against the window. "I'm the Alpha of the pack Midnight Eclipse. Jacob is my Beta. Yes, we're wolves. As wolves, we have mates. True loves that are bonded to us by the Goddess, Selene. Your friend Natalie is his, I believe you to be mine." "Why should I believe you're a wolf? Or that I'm this mate thing?" His eyes flashed black for a second while his canines elongated. Then, just like that, he was back to normal. "Holy f*ck! Ok... You're a wolf. I believe you. But I'm sorry, I'm not your mate thing. That's impossible. I just got dumped." "When you kissed me last night, did you feel as though you were struck by lightning?" How could he possibly know about that weird zapping sensation? "The look on your face says yes." Natty twisted in her seat to look back at me. "Lexxy, that lightning is the mate bond. When you touch your destined mate, it feels like electrocution. They can also smell you. For instance, Jake smells like cinnamon. He says I smell like apple pie." "So to me, you smell like rain. You taste like rain, too." He chuckled, eyes flashing black again for a split second. "I knew the moment Marcus was about to send you away. That's why I told him to let you in." "But that doesn't make any sense. I was literally engaged until last night. So how would I be your mate thing if I was with someone else?" This was crazy. He was crazy. For the last five years I thought Brent was my true love, now this guy I just met last night was telling me I was his? "Even if you were engaged, you were still destined to be with me. Selene doesn't make mistakes. You and Brent were never meant to last." The moment he said that I felt myself reach out and slap him across the face. "How. Dare. You! Brent was my everything! How dare you tell me that we weren't meant to be together! We were together for five years!" I screamed at him. Tyler placed his hand to his cheek and sighed. "I want to go home. I want to go home right now. Take me home!" "Jake, it's ok. Take her home." Tyler said, still holding his cheek. "Lexxy, please. Come with us. Just let us explain." Natty pleaded with me. "No. I just... I can't do this. I want to go home. I want to go to bed." "Lexxy, I promise you. If you come with us, we'll explain everything. You'll feel better. I promise." She was giving me that look she'd given me since we were kids. The one that said shut up and listen. I figured it would be no use arguing and just nodded. "Alright. Fine. Take me wherever you were going to take me." Tyler pulled his hand from his cheek and smiled. "Well, you heard the lady. Let's get to the packhouse." Did he say packhouse?
