Chapter:5 The blood Pit

744 Words
The border town of Thorn was ugly. Mud. Blood. Smoke. It was the kind of place packs pretended didn’t exist. And right in the center of it... the Pit. A giant circle dug into the ground. Metal bars. Torches. And hundreds of wolves screaming for blood. I pulled my hood lower. "Ghost" had to look like just another rogue. "First time?" The man at the entrance barely looked at me. "50 coins to enter. Winner gets 500. You die, we take your body." I dropped the coins Mara gave me. My stomach twisted. This was it. No going back. Inside, the air smelled like iron and fear. Fighters were everywhere. Scarred males. Female rogues. Even a few ex-pack wolves. All of them had that same look in their eyes. Desperate. A woman with a clipboard and a scar across her face pointed at me. "You. New blood. Name?" "Ghost," I said, voice low. She wrote it down. "First fight in 10 minutes. Don’t die." --- The bell rang. My first opponent was massive. A bear shifter who smelled like ale and rage. He looked at me and laughed. "Little girl? This will be fast." Maybe. The gate opened. He charged. I moved. All those weeks of training with Mara flashed through my head. Dodge. Strike. Don’t think. I was smaller. Faster. Meaner. He swung. I ducked under and drove my elbow into his ribs. He roared and grabbed me. His claws ripped across my back. Pain exploded. But pain was familiar now. I shifted halfway. Claws out. And went for his throat. The crowd went WILD. When it was over, he was on his knees and I was standing over him. I didn’t kill him. But I made him yield. "WINNER: GHOST!" the announcer screamed. 500 coins hit my hand. Heavy. I limped back to the holding area, shaking. I had done it. "Not bad," a voice said. I turned. Another fighter. Male. Dark hair. Eyes that looked too smart for this place. He wasn’t big like the others. But he moved like a predator. "Thanks," I muttered. "You fight like someone with something to prove." He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. "Be careful, Ghost. The next rounds get worse." "Who are you?" "Call me Ryder." He held out a hand. I didn’t take it. He laughed. "Smart. Trust no one here." The bell rang again. Fight after fight. Day after day. I won 4 times. Lost once. My body was a map of bruises and cuts. But my coin pouch was getting heavy. And something else was changing. I was getting stronger. My wolf was no longer scared. She liked the fight. She liked the freedom. On the 5th night, Ryder found me again. "You’re good," he said. "Too good for this place." "And you’re not?" I asked. He leaned against the wall. "I’m looking for someone." "Who?" "An Alpha who rejected his mate. Threw her out like trash." His eyes flicked to me. "Sound familiar?" My blood went cold. "What do you know?" I whispered. "I know Blackwood. I know Carter." He stepped closer. "And I know you’re not the first Omega he’s done this to." Lies. It had to be lies. But the way he said it... the certainty in his voice. "What do you want?" I asked. "Help me take him down." Ryder’s voice was quiet. "There are others. Other rejects. Other wolves he’s hurt. We’re building something. An army of the broken." I laughed bitterly. "An army? With what?" "With wolves like you. Wolves who have nothing left to lose." He held out a card. Black. With a silver wolf on it. "When you’re ready, find us. Thorn. The old warehouse. Midnight." I didn’t take the card. "Why me?" "Because I saw you fight today, Ghost." His smile was sharp. "And I saw the fire in your eyes. You don’t want revenge. You want justice." The bell rang. My next fight. I walked away without answering. But that night, as I counted my coins and cleaned my wounds, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. An army. Of broken wolves. Could I really do it? Could I really go back and face Carter... not alone, but with others? Or was this just another trap? I looked at the dagger Mara gave me. Wolfsbane. Then I looked at the card in my hand. For the first time since the rejection, I didn’t feel alone. Maybe... just maybe... I wasn’t.
