The alarm bells woke the Underground.
Ethan burst through the door of his room, his heart already pounding. Ava was waiting in the corridor, her face grim. Damian stood beside her, his silver eyes scanning the darkness.
"How bad?" Ethan asked.
"Bad," Ava said. "They've sealed all the main exits. We're trapped."
Ethan followed her through the winding corridors of the Underground. People were running everywhere—grabbing children, gathering weapons, shouting orders. The chaos was overwhelming.
Viktor met them at the central square. His face was hard, his rifle cradled in his arms.
"They came through the eastern tunnel," he said. "Hit us before we could react. We've got guards holding them back, but they're pushing through."
"How many?" Damian asked.
"Dozens. Maybe more. They've got Wraiths with them."
Ethan felt his blood run cold. Wraiths. The pale, twisted creatures from the sewer. He'd barely survived one encounter with them.
"We need to evacuate," Ava said. "Get the civilians out."
"There's nowhere to evacuate to," Viktor replied. "They've got the entire perimeter locked down. We fight, or we die."
"Then we fight."
---
Viktor led them to the defensive line. It was a barricade of salvaged metal and furniture, manned by a dozen armed men and women. Beyond it, the tunnel entrance glowed with an eerie red light.
"They're coming," one of the guards said. His voice shook. "They're coming now."
Shapes emerged from the darkness. Wraiths. At least twenty of them, their pale skin shimmering in the red glow. Behind them came human soldiers in black armor, carrying rifles and pulse weapons.
Ethan gripped the edge of the barricade. His hands were trembling.
"Focus," Damian said quietly. "Remember what you learned. Control the light. Don't let it control you."
Ethan closed his eyes. The warmth was already building in his chest, responding to the threat. He breathed slowly, steadily, trying to keep it contained.
The first wave hit the barricade.
The guards opened fire. Rifle shots echoed through the cavern, mingling with the screams of the Wraiths. Two of the creatures fell, their bodies dissolving into ash. But the others kept coming, climbing over the barricade with inhuman speed.
Viktor swung his rifle like a club, smashing a Wraith in the face. It reeled back, and he put a bullet through its skull. "Ethan! Now!"
Ethan raised his hands. The light exploded from his palms, a golden wave that washed over the advancing Wraiths. They screamed and recoiled, their skin blistering. The human soldiers stumbled back, shielding their eyes.
"Keep going!" Ava shouted.
Ethan pushed harder. The light intensified, filling the tunnel with blinding radiance. The Wraiths fled, disappearing into the darkness. The soldiers retreated, dragging their wounded with them.
Silence fell. The guards stared at Ethan with a mixture of awe and fear.
"That was..." one of them started.
"Don't say it," Damian interrupted. "Save your breath. This isn't over."
Viktor nodded grimly. "He's right. That was just the first wave. They'll be back. With more."
---
Ethan collapsed against the barricade. His body was trembling, his head pounding. The light had drained him more than he'd expected.
"You did good," Damian said, crouching beside him. "But you used too much. You need to conserve your energy."
"I didn't know how else to stop them."
"You'll learn. With practice."
Ava approached, her weapon still drawn. "Viktor's right. They'll regroup and hit us again. We need a plan."
Viktor joined them. "The eastern tunnel is the main approach. If we can collapse it, we can buy ourselves time."
"Collapse it how?" Ethan asked.
"We've got demolition charges. Enough to bring down the ceiling. But someone has to plant them."
"Let me guess," Damian said. "That someone is us."
Viktor nodded. "I'll send a team. But I need Ethan to provide cover. His light is the only thing that can hold the Wraiths back."
Ethan pushed himself to his feet. His legs were shaking, but he forced them to hold him. "I'll do it."
"Ethan—" Ava started.
"I said I'll do it. If I don't, we all die. What choice do I have?"
Ava held his gaze for a long moment. Then she nodded. "Fine. But I'm coming with you."
"No," Viktor said. "Ava, you stay here. I need you to coordinate the defense."
"I'm going with Ethan."
Viktor sighed. "Stubborn. Fine. But if you get yourself killed, don't expect me to rescue you."
Ava smirked. "Wouldn't dream of it."
---
The team moved out. Ethan, Ava, Damian, and three of Viktor's best fighters. They crept through the tunnels, staying close to the walls, moving as quietly as they could.
The demolition charges were heavy, but the fighters carried them without complaint. They were veterans, hardened by years of surviving in the Underground.
They reached the eastern tunnel. The red glow was stronger here, pulsing like a heartbeat. Ethan could feel the darkness pressing against his senses, cold and hungry.
"How far do we need to go?" Ethan whispered.
"About fifty meters," one of the fighters said. "The tunnel narrows there. A single charge will bring the whole thing down."
"Let's do it."
They moved forward, stepping carefully over debris and rubble. The red glow intensified. The air grew colder.
Then they saw them.
Wraiths. Dozens of them. Crouching in the darkness, waiting.
"They knew we were coming," Damian said.
Ethan raised his hands. The light flickered to life, casting golden shadows across the tunnel walls. The Wraiths hissed and recoiled.
"Now!" Ava shouted.
The fighters sprinted forward, carrying the charges. Ethan followed, keeping his light focused on the Wraiths. They backed away, screaming, but they didn't flee.
They were waiting. For something.
Ethan felt it before he saw it. A presence. Massive and ancient and terrible. It pressed against his mind, cold and suffocating.
"What is that?" he gasped.
Damian's face went pale. "The Shadow Lord. One of the Order's greatest weapons. They've sent it to kill you."
The Wraiths parted, and the Shadow Lord emerged.
It was huge. Easily twelve feet tall, with a body made of shifting darkness and pulsing red light. It had no face, no features, just a void where its head should be. But Ethan could feel its eyes on him. Hungry. Patient.
"Ethan," Damian said. "Run."
"I can't—"
"Run! Now!"
Ethan turned and ran. Ava was beside him, pulling him forward. The fighters had planted the charges and were retreating.
The Shadow Lord moved. Faster than anything that size should have been able to move. It swept a massive arm through the tunnel, smashing into the ceiling. Debris rained down.
"Detonate!" Viktor's voice crackled over the radio. "Detonate now!"
The charges exploded. The tunnel collapsed behind them, a roar of stone and dust that shook the ground. The Shadow Lord's presence receded, cut off by the rubble.
Ethan stumbled to a halt. His chest was heaving. His heart was racing.
"Did we get it?" he asked.
"Trapped," Ava said. "Not dead. But it'll take time for it to dig out. Time we can use."
They made their way back to the Underground. The defenders were cheering, celebrating the successful strike.
But Ethan couldn't celebrate. He could still feel the Shadow Lord's gaze on him. Cold. Hungry.
---
Viktor met them at the barricade. "The collapse held," he said. "We've bought ourselves a few hours at least."
"Hours," Ethan repeated. "Then what?"
"Then we fight again. Or we find another way out."
"Is there another way out?"
Viktor hesitated. "There's an old tunnel. Leads to the surface. But it's dangerous. Unstable. No one's used it in years."
"Then that's our way out."
Viktor shook his head. "It's too risky. The tunnel could collapse at any moment. We'd be burying ourselves alive."
"We're already trapped. What's the difference?"
Viktor was silent. Then he nodded slowly. "I'll get a team together. We leave in an hour."
---
Ethan sat alone in the room Viktor had given them. His body was exhausted, but his mind wouldn't stop racing.
The Shadow Lord. The Wraiths. The Order's soldiers. They were all hunting him. And they wouldn't stop until they had him.
He thought about what Viktor had said. About Project Genesis. About the creation of light and dark.
"Ethan."
He looked up. Ava was standing in the doorway, watching him.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
"No. I'm not okay. I'm trapped in a cave with a bunch of strangers, being hunted by things that shouldn't exist. How could I be okay?"
Ava stepped into the room. "I know it's a lot. I know it's overwhelming. But you're doing better than you think."
"Better? I can barely control my power. I just ran from a monster that's probably going to kill us all."
"Running is smart. It's what keeps you alive." She sat beside him. "You'll learn to fight. You'll get stronger. But only if you survive long enough."
Ethan looked at her. "Why do you care? You barely know me."
Ava was quiet for a moment. Then she said: "Because I've seen what the Order does to people. I've seen them destroy lives. Families. Communities. I want to stop them."
"Just that?"
"Just that."
But Ethan could see something in her eyes. Something she wasn't telling him. A secret. A hidden agenda.
He didn't push. He didn't have the energy.
"Fine," he said. "We leave in an hour. Let's get ready."
Ava nodded and left.
Ethan sat alone in the silence, staring at his hands.
The light was waiting inside him. Patient. Hungry.
He didn't know if he could control it. He didn't know if he could survive.
But he knew one thing.
He was going to try.
---
The tunnel entrance was at the far end of the Underground, hidden behind a false wall. Viktor led them there, carrying a lamp that cast long shadows across the walls.
"This passage hasn't been used in decades," Viktor said. "It leads to an old maintenance shaft. From there, you can reach the surface."
"You're not coming?" Ethan asked.
"Someone has to stay and lead the Underground. We can't all leave."
"But the Order—"
"I'll handle them. I've survived worse."
Ethan looked at the tunnel entrance. It was narrow and dark, the walls lined with ancient cobwebs.
"How do we know it's safe?" he asked.
"We don't," Viktor said. "But it's the only way out."
Ethan nodded. He turned to the others. Ava. Damian. A few fighters who had volunteered to come with them.
"Let's go," he said.
They stepped into the tunnel. The darkness closed around them like a shroud.
Behind them, the Underground prepared for war.
---
The tunnel was cold and damp. Water dripped from the ceiling, forming puddles on the uneven floor. The air smelled of rust and decay.
They walked for what felt like hours. The tunnel twisted and turned, sometimes narrowing until they had to crawl, sometimes opening into small caverns.
"The tunnel is shifting," Damian said. "I can feel it."
"Shifting how?" Ethan asked.
"The structure is unstable. The walls are moving. It won't hold forever."
"Then we move faster."
They pushed on. The tunnel grew narrower. The ceiling lowered.
Then the ground gave way.
Ethan fell. He tumbled through darkness, hitting rocks and debris, his body screaming in pain. He landed hard, the breath knocked out of him.
He lay there for a moment, gasping. Then he forced himself to sit up.
"Ethan!" Ava's voice echoed from above. "Are you okay?"
"I'm alive," he called back. "What happened?"
"The floor collapsed. You fell into a lower chamber."
Ethan looked around. He was in a small room, maybe fifteen feet across. The walls were made of rough stone. And in the center of the room was a pedestal.
On the pedestal sat a book.
He stood slowly, ignoring his aching body. He walked to the pedestal and looked at the book. It was old, bound in cracked leather, the pages yellowed with age.
The title was stamped in gold letters: The Origin of Light and Darkness.
Ethan's heart raced. This was it. The truth.
He reached out to touch the book.
"The ground is shaking," Damian said from above. "Ethan, get out of there!"
The walls began to crack. Dust rained down from the ceiling.
Ethan grabbed the book and shoved it into his jacket. Then he scrambled up the rockfall, climbing as fast as he could.
The tunnel collapsed behind him.
---
He emerged into the main passage gasping for air. Ava pulled him to his feet.
"What happened down there?" she demanded.
Ethan pulled out the book. "I found this."
The title gleamed in the dim light. Ava stared at it, her eyes wide.
"Where did you—"
"There's no time," Damian interrupted. "The tunnel is collapsing. We need to get out of here now."
They ran. The tunnel shook around them, chunks of rock falling from the ceiling. They stumbled and scrambled and pushed each other forward.
Finally, they saw light. Real light. Sunlight.
They burst out of the tunnel and into the open air.
Ethan collapsed to his knees, gasping for breath. The sun was rising over the horizon, painting the sky in shades of gold and pink.
They had escaped.
---
Ethan looked at the book in his hands. The Origin of Light and Darkness.
Everything he needed to know was inside.
"How far is the nearest town?" he asked.
"About ten miles," Ava said. "But we should avoid towns. The Order will be looking for us."
"Then we find shelter. We read this book. And we figure out our next move."
Damian nodded. "That's a good plan."
Ethan stood. His body ached. His mind was racing.
But he felt something he hadn't felt in a long time.
Hope.
---
He opened the book's cover, and the first words he read made his blood run cold: "The light was never meant to save humanity. It was meant to destroy it."
