Chapter 4After they had all finished eating, Phoebe and James went down to the promenade. It was a cold, bright day and a fierce wind swept in off the sea and blew their clothes and hair back behind them, so that they looked like dummies being pulled by invisible strings. They walked along the seafront and went onto the pier, where couples were out strolling in their Sunday best; and as they went along, Phoebe saw an old classmate of hers from her schooldays, Jean Plummer, coming towards her. Jean was with a young man, Phoebe noticed.
