Chapter 13Later that morning Phoebe changed into her long green dress and her court shoes, and put on a black coat and matching hat and scarf, before she told her mother that she was going to pay a call on Laura Burroughs, an old friend from her schooldays. And as she walked through the streets, the bitter wind was like a cold blade against her cheeks. It always seemed to be colder here, in Hove, than it was in Oxford, what with the way the wind blew in up the long, broad avenues off the sea.
