Chapter 16Michael would never forget the train journey he made to his home town of Bristol, after he had been sent down, back in September. It might not be so very far in actual miles from Oxford to Bristol, but that day Michael felt as though he had travelled an awful long way in terms of experience. Doors that had been open to him only days before, while he had still been a student at Balliol, were, he now realized, well and truly closed.
