INVISIBLEPhoenix crouched in the semi-darkness and lifted the silver fern frond upright with her fingers. It bent at an odd angle, the main stem fractured at the halfway point. “She went this way.” The surety in her voice drew a nod from Kirwan and Grant. Lifting her torch, she shone it in the direction she imagined Kylie running.
“Thank the good Lord you can track,” Grant gushed. His voice sounded breathy. “Do you think she’s heading for the ridge? It’s a sheer drop. She could pitch over it before she even knows it’s there.” Shaking fingers lifted his baseball cap and he wiped his sweating forehead with his other hand.
Phoenix winced. “I don’t know the geography of this reserve. A map would have been helpful.”
