Chapter Twenty-Eight
TRUTH“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ That’s what he said.” Phoenix cleared her throat and paused. The thin pages of Bibles rustled as the girls followed her reading, their fingers tracing the sentences. Phoenix looked at their bowed heads and sickness roiled in her stomach.
Kylie nudged her with her elbow and tipped her delicate face up like a blossoming flower. “John 8:31-32,” she confirmed. She sat on the bottom bunk with Phoenix, their thighs touching and no room between them. A sense of suffocation swallowed Phoenix. She forced her head to give a tight nod.
“That’s right,” she agreed. “Thanks Kyles. What truth does Jesus mean?”
