Lyra had never felt so out of place in her life. In the small, opulent sitting room of the Alpha's mansion, she stood stiffly, trying to seem smaller and less noticeable. She was acutely aware of her rumpled clothes, her lack of status, and the scent of the woods that still clung to her skin.
But then, a kind voice broke through her thoughts. "Hello there," it said, and Lyra turned to see the Alpha's wife smiling at her. She was a regal woman, with dark hair and piercing blue eyes, but her smile was warm and welcoming. "I'm Selene, the Alpha's mate. And who might you be?"
Lyra's heart raced as she awkwardly curtsied. "Lyra, ma'am. I'm just a traveler passing through."
"Well, Lyra, you certainly have a way with animals," Selene said, gesturing to the wolf lying at Lyra's feet. "My husband was quite impressed with your skills. He's asked to meet with you."
Lyra's eyes widened in surprise. She had never even dreamed of meeting the Alpha, let alone being summoned to his mansion. But before she could respond, Selene continued, "I've had some tea and pastries brought in for us. Would you join me?"
Lyra couldn't believe her luck as she followed Selene to a small table by the window. As they sat and chatted, Lyra found herself relaxing and forgetting her earlier discomfort. And when the Alpha finally arrived, she was able to hold her head high and meet his gaze with confidence. Little did she know that her encounter with the Alpha would change her life forever.
"Hello there, it's nice to meet you. I'm Susan, Jared's aunt."
Lyra looked up from the rough dirt path she had been absentmindedly tracing with her toes and saw a woman standing before her, her features softened by a warm smile. Lyra guessed her to be in her early thirties, with kind eyes that seemed to invite confidences and a warm, welcoming demeanor.
"Hello there," the woman said with a gentle voice, extending a hand. "I'm Aisha. And you must be Lyra."Her voice was like music, and Lyra found herself drawn in despite her unease. She tentatively took the proffered hand and shook it, nodding in confirmation.
"I'm sorry for the intrusion," Aisha continued, her smile never faltering. "But I couldn't help but notice you seemed a bit lost. Is there anything I can do to help? "Lyra hesitated for a moment, unsure if she should trust this stranger. But something in Aisha's manner put her at ease, and before she knew it, she was telling her everything. The tears came freely as she poured out her heart, her worries, and her fears.
Aisha listened patiently, her expression growing more sorrowful with every word. When Lyra had finished, she reached out and took her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
"Thank you for trusting me with your story," Aisha said softly. "I know it must have been difficult for you to tell. "Lyra sniffled and nodded, wiping her tears away with the back of her hand.
"But I also want you to know that you are not alone," Aisha continued. "I may not have all the answers, but I am here for you. And there are others who will be too, if you let them." Lyra couldn't help but smile, feeling a tiny glimmer of hope in the darkness that had been consuming her.
"Thank you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
