“Tell him his wife is calling,” I say, my voice hollow. “It’s an emergency.” Callum comes on the line sounding convincingly concerned. “Emery? What’s wrong? What’s the emergency?” “No, Callum. I’m the one asking the questions. Number one: who did you hire to pretend to be David Montgomery from the tax board?” When his pause draws out too long, I warn, “If you ever want to see me again, you’ll tell me the truth.” There’s a sound on the other end of the line.
