Alyssa gulped, not wanting to reveal her thoughts, she blinked and lowered her head to gaze steadily at her clasped fingers.
Meanwhile, with the arrival of Zion, a clear frown etched on Nathan's face.
His brows bent, and his eyes narrowed subtly.
“Zion,” The Mistress of the Devon household called out his name. Her voice held a tinge of worry in it.
Ignoring her, Zion majestically strode further. His sharp gaze pierced right into Nathan; whose expression wasn't any calm either.
“Who is she?” he asked straight away. His chin tipped to the side where the young girl stood, cowering like a drenched puppy.
Of course, Alyssa knew she was the one being referred to. There was no doubting that.
Her ears perked up in attention to hear what the youngest son had to reply to that.
Astonishingly, a mild chuckle echoed in the massive dinner hall.
It belonged to Nathan.
One would think he was unfazed to his brother's unnecessary ranting; but the tight scowl on his face told otherwise.
“You don't have to be bothered about it, she's my person, and has nothing to do with you,” Nathan grunted in his response.
Hearing his retort, Alyssa flickered a brow.
Oh, she definitely had everything to do with him—she could only say that in her mind.
He's the reason she's here for a start.
His downfall depends on her.
“Oh really,” Zion smirked. There was this wicked glint in his deep grey eyes. And once Alyssa raised her head to look up at the scene, she was met with this very sight that made her feet go stiff.
“She doesn't have anything to do with me, you say,” he quoted, with that same expression.
By now the mansion's Mistress didn't even know where to begin to salvage the situation between the two brothers.
She could only watch with a troubled heart.
“What's going on?” just then, another figure made it's presence into view.
It was a middle aged man, with dark beards and slightly wrinkled cheeks.
Confusion was vivid in his eyes while he approached the scene; and of course the frown when he spotted an unfamiliar face in their midst.
“Good morning, uncle,” Nathan greeted in a mellow tone.
The said man nodded before looking over to Zion. Seeing him outraged, he could only reckon something was definitely wrong again.
They all silently watched as Zion took out his phone from his pant's pocket.
His expression was heavy as his fingers hastily glided on the screen.
When he got what he wanted, he directed the screen at the infuriating Nathan.
Snatching the phone from his hand, Nathan's brows furrowed by what he was seeing.
It was a video clip of the little girl he had saved last night; patrolling through their mansion in places she was not to go.
The baffling part was when it showed her on the third floor of the mansion, standing right in front of his door and meticulously observing the area.
Nathan slowly moved his attention to Alyssa who had had her head down all the while.
Alyssa, feeling all eyes on her, gradually raised up her head, to be startled by the attention she was receiving.
Some were of suspicion, some were of worry and the other…it was heavily frightening. She couldn't describe it, perhaps pure hatred?
Moving her eyes away, she looked at Nathan who was looking at her with a lot of emotions in his eyes.
Taking in her lower lip between her teeth fearfully, Alyssa muttered, “—Did I do anything wrong?” her voice was so soft that it was barely audible if not for the silence of the room.
Her eyes swiftly cruised through each of them, while her palms trembled.
“Did you leave your room on your own this morning?”
Alyssa was appalled by the question. Facially, she looked nervous.
Meanwhile inwardly, her mind was racing with countless possibilities.
Could it be that she had been caught?
What are the odds?
An internal battle was going on on the inside.
She carefully scrutinized his face.
Gambling what her response should be…
“Yes, yes I did,” she chose the truth.
Lying would end terribly for her if she's to be shown evidence.
And of course, she didn't need to be highlighted that it was indeed evidence that was in the phone that was in Nathan's hands right now.
Furthermore, the cameras installed in the mansion weren't for decorations.
Alyssa saw Nathan's brows furrow by her reply. His gaze had turned sharp, staring at her.
She shivered.
Reminding him of the helpless girl he had rescued in the dark of dawn.
“Why?” his intonation was in contrast to his expression.
Alyssa flinched even when his voice sounded harmless.
Beads of tears already welled up in her eyes, ready to start pouring.
Anyone that'll see her right now, would think she was getting oppressed and bullied.
Her expression was heartbreaking, and it indeed touched the old Mistress.
But knowing better, she decided to be quiet and just watch—not wanting to ignite the fury of her eldest son.
“I—I…” Alyssa began, her chin trembling. “I wanted to find you,” with the statement dropped, a tear strolled down her cheek.
Nathan's expression softened.
He sighed and asked, “Find me, why?”
Alyssa mummed her lips together hardly. She hesitated, looking at them all once again.
Her gaze couldn't help but stop at Zion who was glaring at her with one brow raised, and a glint in his eyes that spelt the words. ‘I know you're lying,’
She couldn't understand!
She had yet to say a thing!
Instantly turning away from him, Alyssa fidgeted with her fingers. “I—I wanted to see you. I mean…you're the only one I know here, so…” she whispered, fixing her face back down to the ground as though there was something interesting written on it.
Hearing her explanation, Nathan relaxed.
His expression had turned calmer.
The minute he wanted prying his mouth to say something, he was mercilessly interrupted by his elder brother.
“You still haven't told me what a complete stranger is doing in my house?” Zion stated with fury.
His eyes were burning with anger as they shot daggers at Nathan.
With his hands in his pockets, he looked intimidating and there's no way someone would be able to come for him willingly. Except they desperately needed death.
Not even in hell that is happening.
Right now, this thought made Alyssa rethink her decision in completing this suicide mission!
