Silver's POV
Thanksgiving, the 19th November.
The day where you give thanks to your family members for their support. It used to be my favorite day of the year after Christmas and New year. Mainly because I had a family to give thanks to. A family that adopted me and was nothing but kind and loving to me. But now I have no family to give thanks to. In fact it's become the worst day of the year for me. Because it's the day I lost my parents. My only family.
Flashback (5 years ago)
"Silver, darling I hope you have not forgotten to buy the chicken for our traditional thanksgiving rice chicken soup."
Oh no.
"Mom, sorry I kinda forgot. " I mumbled sheepishly.
Then we heard dad's deep laughter in the room. Both mom and I turned to him with glares in our eyes.
He then tried to cover his laughter with a cough.
"Errr, ehem, I mean, Lisa darling why don't we go out buy this chicken for the soup. I'm sure Silver will be able to cook the rest of the meals while we are away. "
"That's a good idea darling. Let me just go change into something more comfortable, OK. "
Then the image flashed through my mind. My mom and dad were inside a car. There was blood everywhere. I couldn't really see dad but I saw mom. Then the car suddenly exploded. "Mooom, daaad". I shouted and suddenly I was wide awake.
My dad was looming over me with concern swimming in his brown orbs.
"Baby are you okay? "
"Yeah dad, what just happened? "
"You kinda zoned out while we were waiting for your mom. Then you suddenly started screaming our names, is everything alright? "
"Silver, why were you screaming like that? " Mom said and when she entered my line of view, I froze.
She was wearing the same dress as in the car. Oh no.
"Mom, dad please don't go. Please. "
"Silver, is everything alright? "
"No. Nothing is alright. I saw it I saw you, you were-were in the c-car a-and th-there was blood everywhere "
"That was just a dream, dear. Nothing to worry about, okay. Now come, David. Let's go. I'm ready. " mom said.
"Your mother is right. We'll be back in no time dear. Don't worry "
"No. no, please" I said standing in the doorway now.
"Miss Silver Dawn, get outta the way. Do not worry, please" dad said.
"Do you think this is some kind of joke dad. I'm telling you what I saw. Let me just go buy the chicken while you guys stay here okay. "
"Wow, Silver, you never lack excuses to avoid work. You think I'm that stupid to let you go. Besides this is one of the rare days your father and I get to have time for ourselves. We can't just not go because of one of your stupid dreams. Now come David, let's go. "
She dragged him with her and my father cast me an apologetic look.
There was nothing I could do. I watched pathetically as they took off on a road that I knew will be the death of them. I can just pray hard and hope nothing bad happens.
10mins, 15mins, 20mins, 1hr, 3hrs, 5hrs.
Dammit. Why aren't they back yet?
Silver, silver stop being dramatic. They'll soon pass the door and everything will the alright again.
Mom will probably scold you for not cooking the rest of the meal as she asked and dad will be laughing in the background as usual and then we will both turn to glare at him and then -
My thoughts were caught short when the noise I dreaded the most shot through my eardrums.
The phone. The 'dring dring' sound it makes. Just like in movies where they call the victim's family to tell them their relatives were no more.
I was afraid to pick it up but I did anyway.
"Hello? "
"Hi sweetheart. Just to tell you your mom and I will be home soon. "
I heard my dad's deep voice and I couldn't help but feel relieved. I let out a heavy breath I didn't know I was holding.
I was about to ask them what took them so long when I heard a sharp scream followed by the sound of brakes, then a crash and the sound of metal rolling over when I thought it was all over, I heard a boom sound as the line went dead... together with my heart.
End of flashback.
Right now, I'm in front of my parent's grave, with a picnic basket that consisted of our traditional rice and chicken soup together with pineapple juice.
That's how I celebrate all my Thanksgivings now. I will forever be grateful to my parents because if it wasn't for them, I don't know where i'll be now.
They gave me a name and a family but I- I couldn't help but feel guilty.
If only I hadn't appeared in their life...
If only I had bought the damn chicken
If only I had stopped them...
If only-
I hadn't realized I was thinking out loud when a familiar voice snapped at me.
"If only what" I heard an all too familiar voice tell me. Noemie, my bff she's the one who helped me throughout the most miserable part of my life.
"Noemie, what are you doing here? "
"The real question is what are you doing with your life? "
"Noemie, I -"
"Listen S you can't keep blaming yourself for what happened. It was destined to be like that whether you bought the chicken or not. There are things you just can't control".
She stopped for a moment to look at me in the eye. Then she continued.
"S, your parents were the happiest parents on earth because they had a wonderful daughter. Think about all the joy you brought to them Hm do you think they will be happy to see you like this? "
She was right. Ever since my parents died, I couldn't stop blaming myself. I closed off from everything and everyone.
I got up and hugged her tight blessing the day she came into my life. Her and her wonderful family.
"Thanks Sol. Thank you very much. "
