Chloe would surely lecture me again, I thought. She had this whole motivational speaker thing going on for her since the accident in a fit to comfort me she had been scrolling through i********:, listening to her podcasts about miracles and healing. She would go on about the power of the mind and how the mind can heal the body. The power of meditation and on and on. Scrolling furiously on i********: for videos and quotes she saved to show me. She would often try to make me laugh by showing me memes and funny videos she knew I would like. She was always lighthearted knowing I needed it the most. That's why I couldn't be around my parents because I could feel their sorrow, concern, and pity for me. That's why she was the only one by my side. She always knew what I needed and when and for that she was precious to me. But underneath it all she had questions. She kept it down for my sake. But I knew I had to address it. She was confused by the circumstances of the accident. Why I was refusing to see Jacob and never called for Sarah. Sarah wouldn't even try to meet me and it was eating away at her. She knew something was going on between the three of us. I knew I had to address it soon. There was a knock at the door. Expecting Chloe I called out for her to come in. An older gentleman in a sharp grey suit walked in instead to my surprise. He looked to be in his forties, he exuded a highly professional aura. He was carrying a briefcase in one hand and a beautiful bouquet of lilies. I could smell the lilies as soon as he walked in and they smelled so refreshing and comforting. I realised then that he must be the one bringing in the flowers to me every week. He politely introduces himself. "Hello Miss Evans, I am Robert Anderson. I am here on behalf of my employer to visit you. I know you have been through a lot and I do not wish to intrude on you greatly. Would it be alright with you if we could speak for a while? " He continued "This is regarding the accident and discuss our plans moving forward." It took me a moment to come to my senses and I realised that he must be here on behalf of the driver of the car who was involved in the accident. I nodded in response and motioned him to sit down near me. As he motioned forward to sit down, I realised that he was quite tall and well-built for his age. He had this all-American vibe to him. He had dark blonde hair and chiseled features. He had a somewhat fatherly sense about him despite his professional exterior. I decided to try and relax despite how tense and nervous I was feeling. '"Thank you Miss Evans" he said before he sat down. "How are you feeling?" he asked. "Doctor Stevens has reported to me that you are making great progress in your recovery. He is pleased that your condition has stabilised enough to start a physical therapy program soon." Of course, I thought they are the ones paying for my medical expenses, it would only make sense that the doctors would report to them regarding my condition. I sighed, "Thank you for your concern, Mr. Anderson. However, I believe that is not why you are here. How can I help you?" He nodded "Miss Evans, I wanted to discuss the issue regarding the case of your accident settlement'. You see my employer wishes to remain anonymous and does not wish to take the court. I am sure you would agree that going to court will only be troublesome for both parties financially and time-wise." He continued with a very professional demeanor "We only wish for you Miss Evans to focus on your recovery. " I squeaked "Settlement? " I should have known that they would be asking for a settlement. My parents have suggested that the car belonged to someone wealthy and influential. That's how they were able to pay for my medical expenses and even board me in a private room. I suppose it would tarnish their reputation if the news was out that they had even accidentally hit a pregnant woman and caused the death of her baby. They were taking every precaution necessary and treading carefully around me. This was damage control in the sphere of the affluent, for the people who lived in a different world from us. They saw the situation differently. For me, it was a tragic accident while, for them, it was a heavy liability and potential lawsuit. Perhaps, even a scandal or image ruining news in the press. I felt burdened by this. They did not care for me. They did not know me and it was not their fault as far as I was aware from the reports of the accident and recounts from those around me. It had been misfortune tangled with my own poor choices. I felt only guilty and heavy. I did not like this feeling at all. I was enough to mess as it was. Significant relationships around me had collapsed. I lost my job due to my absence and my body and soul were in turmoil. I did not want to entangle myself and cross the person who was behind the gentleman before me who I was sure was far more powerful and saw the world from a different vantage than myself. " I assure you Miss Evans all medical expenses including your emotional and physical therapy for the next year will be covered along with your lot wages "he continued on in a very lawyer-like scripted manner. 'In addition, you will receive a generous payout of $5 million dollar. All we ask in return is your cooperation regarding the matter and for you to sign our agreement." He took out his papers from his briefcase which looked like a formal contract of some sort. "Of course, my client wishes to stay anonymous. You will have to sign a non-disclosure agreement and not speak of it to the public or anyone. There will be fines associated with breaking the agreement so I suggest you read over and speak to your lawyer regarding this matter. If you are happy to proceed and negotiate any changes please contact me." He spoke calmly as he handed me his business card. I wondered if he was a lawyer however, upon looking at his card I realised that he was not a lawyer but a secretary. Not only that he was a secretary for the 'Ortega Group'. The Ortega Group was an international large corporation. They were the parent company to many well-known companies in various industries from designer fashion houses to electronics, and agriculture. They had their hands in possibly every major industry. If he was working under someone high up in position, it was easy to see why they were willing to throw millions at me " 5 million?" I gasped in disbelief. I never thought I could have so much money in my life. I cannot even imagine what I would do with such money.
