Measures

Sébastien I kept both hands tight on the steering wheel as I drove away from the university. My eyes moved constantly between the road and the rearview mirrors. The man in the dark jacket had disappeared the moment I looked at him, but that did not mean he was gone. The Unix family was getting closer. Too close. Federica sat quietly in the passenger seat, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She still looked shaken from the message she had received. I hated seeing her like this — nervous, quieter than usual, no longer throwing her usual attitude at me. “Are you cold?” I asked after a few minutes of silence. She shook her head. “No. Just… thinking.” “About the message?” She nodded. “They know where I am. They know I’m in class. How is that possible?” I took a slow breath. “They have eyes everywhere. That is how families like the Unix work. They watch, wait, and strike when they think you are weak.” I glanced at her. “But they will not touch you. Not while I am here.” She looked at me for a long moment. There was something soft in her eyes that made my chest feel tight. Then she turned back to the window. I took a longer route home, changing streets often, checking for any cars that might be following us. Nothing looked suspicious, but I stayed alert. When we finally reached the underground garage of the penthouse, I parked and told her to wait until I checked the area. Only after I was sure it was clear did I open her door. We rode the private elevator in silence. The moment the doors opened on the penthouse floor, I guided her inside with a light hand on her back. Richard Smith was already waiting in the living room. He stood up the second he saw us. “What happened?” he asked, his voice sharp. “You left campus early.” I looked at Federica. “Miss Smith, go to your room and rest. I need to speak with your father.” She hesitated, glancing between us, but then nodded and walked down the hallway. Once her door closed, I turned fully to Richard. “There is a problem,” I said. “A serious one.” Richard’s face hardened. “Explain.” I kept my voice calm and clear. “Federica received a message on her phone during class. It came from an unknown number. The message said the Unix family was watching her and that she could not hide forever. After that, I saw a man near the medical building watching us. He left the moment he noticed me looking at him.” Richard’s jaw tightened. He walked over to the large window and stared out at the city for a few seconds before turning back. “How close did he get?” “Close enough to make contact if he wanted to. They are testing us. Seeing how fast we react. Seeing if there are weak points.” Richard rubbed his forehead. “I paid good money for security. Cameras, guards, everything. How are they still getting this close to my daughter?” “Because they are patient,” I answered. “And because they want to hurt you through her. That is the most dangerous kind of enemy.” He looked at me with hard eyes. “What do you suggest?” “Tighten everything,” I said. “Change her schedule. No more regular class times. I will drive different routes every day. I want extra men around the university, but they must stay hidden. If the Unix family sees too much security, they may change their plan. Also…” I paused. “I want to stay closer to her at night. Sleeping in the guest room is not enough anymore. I need to be near her door.” Richard studied me carefully. “You are asking for a lot of control, Laris.” “I am asking for what is needed to keep her alive,” I replied without looking away. “If they try something, I will not have time to run from the other side of the house.” For a long moment, the only sound was the quiet hum of the air conditioning. Then Richard nodded once. “Do it. Whatever you need. Extra men, different routes, closer protection — I do not care. Just keep my daughter safe.” “I will,” I said. He walked closer and lowered his voice. “Sébastien… if anything happens to her, I will hold you responsible.” “I already hold myself responsible,” I answered. Richard gave a short nod and left the room. I stood there for a few seconds, letting the weight of the situation settle. Then I walked down the hallway and stopped outside Federica’s door. I knocked once. “Miss Smith? May I come in?” There was a short pause before her soft voice answered, “Yes.” I opened the door. She was sitting on the edge of her bed, still in her university clothes, looking small and tired. I stayed near the doorway so she would not feel crowded. “I spoke with your father,” I told her. “We are increasing security. From now on, your schedule will change every day. I will also be staying closer to your room at night.” She looked up at me. “Closer how?” “I will sleep in the hallway outside your door if needed,” I said simply. “Or in the room next to yours. You will not be alone.” She was quiet for a moment. Then she asked, almost in a whisper, “Are they really going to try something?” I did not lie to her. “Yes. They will try. But they will fail.” Her eyes stayed on mine. Something passed between us — fear, trust, and that same heat that had been growing since the night at the club. I forced myself to look away first. “Rest now,” I said. “I will be right outside.” I stepped back into the hallway and closed the door softly. Then I leaned against the wall across from her room, arms crossed, listening to every sound in the quiet penthouse. The Unix family was coming. And I was ready.
