THE BROTHER NOBODY TALKED ABOUT

1188 Words
The room fell into a silence so complete that even the storm outside seemed afraid to interrupt it. No one moved, breathed or spoke. The name Amelia had just uttered echoed through Blake Manor like a curse. Daniel Blake. James Blake stared at her as if he had forgotten how to blink. His face had gone completely pale. For thirty years, he had carried one version of the story. Thirty years of heartbreak, regret and believing he had lost the woman he loved and the child that should have been his. And now— everything he believed was a lie. "My brother?" he whispered. The words sounded broken. Amelia lowered her eyes. James took another step backward. "No." His voice cracked. "No, that's impossible." But deep inside, a terrifying feeling had already begun to grow. Because there was only one reason Daniel's name had never been spoken in Blake Manor. Only one reason every photograph of him had disappeared and nobody ever mentioned him. Daniel Blake was the family scandal. The Blake son everyone had erased. Ethan looked between Amelia and his father. Confusion burned inside him. "Who is Daniel Blake?" His voice cut through the silence. No one answered. His eyes narrowed. "I asked a question." Margaret closed her eyes. For years she had prayed this day would never come. Yet here it was. The past had finally found them. "Daniel was your uncle." Ethan's jaw tightened. "Was?" James swallowed hard. "He died." "When?" "Thirty years ago." The timing hit Ethan immediately. The same year Amelia disappeared. The same year everything went wrong. His pulse quickened. "What happened?" Neither parent answered. That silence told him more than words ever could. Something terrible had happened. Something nobody wanted to remember. Something connected to Elisa. Something connected to Amelia. And somehow— something connected to him. Elisa stood frozen. Her entire body felt numb. She wasn't even sure what questions to ask anymore. Only twenty-four hours ago she had been worried about rent, work and surviving another month. Now she was standing in a billionaire's mansion learning that the mother she had never known was connected to a decades-old family secret. And the family she had grown up believing was hers— might not be her family at all. Her head hurt. Her chest hurt. Everything hurt. "Ethan." His name escaped her lips softly. He immediately turned toward her. The concern in his eyes appeared so naturally that it frightened her. "You okay?" The question almost made her laugh. Okay? Nothing about this was okay. Yet somehow, hearing his voice made the room feel less overwhelming. "No." The word came out honestly. His expression softened. And without caring who was watching, Ethan moved closer. Close enough for her to feel his presence. Close enough to remind her she wasn't alone. Amelia saw it. Margaret saw it. James saw it. Everyone saw it. The billionaire was falling in love. And for the first time, Amelia looked genuinely afraid. "You cannot let this continue." Her voice trembled. Everyone turned toward her. Ethan's eyes darkened. "What are you talking about?" Amelia looked directly at him. "You and Elisa." The room became still. Margaret immediately understood. James understood. Only Ethan and Elisa remained confused. Amelia's voice broke. "You cannot be together." Ethan laughed bitterly. "First you disappear for thirty years." He stepped forward. "Then you walk into my family's home and start making demands?" "Ethan—" "No." His voice thundered through the mansion. The billionaire had finally reached his limit. "You don't get to tell me who I can care about." Amelia looked devastated. "If only it were that simple." "What does that mean?" The question hung in the air. Heavy. Dangerous. Amelia's eyes filled with tears. For a moment she seemed ready to speak. Ready to reveal everything. Then— James suddenly sat down. Hard. The movement startled everyone. He looked older than he had only minutes earlier. As though thirty years of buried memories had returned all at once. "Daniel loved Amelia." His voice was barely above a whisper. The room became silent. "He loved her from the moment he met her." Margaret closed her eyes. She had never heard her husband speak about his brother. Never. Not once. "But Amelia chose me." Pain crossed his face. "At least I thought she did." Amelia began crying. "James..." "I proposed." He laughed bitterly. "And two months later, Daniel was dead." Ethan's heart stopped. "What?" James looked up. His eyes were haunted. "Daniel died the same night Amelia disappeared." The room froze. A cold chill moved through Elisa. Even the storm outside seemed to grow louder. "How?" Ethan asked. James looked away. "He was murdered." The word landed like an explosion. Murdered. For a few seconds nobody moved. Nobody knew what to say. Then Ethan slowly turned toward Amelia. His voice had become deadly calm. "Who killed him?" Amelia's entire body trembled. A fresh wave of tears rolled down her cheeks. She looked terrified. As if speaking the answer could put everyone in danger. Even now. Thirty years later. And that frightened Ethan more than anything else. Because it meant whoever was responsible had enough power to silence people for decades. Amelia looked toward the large windows. Toward the darkness outside. Then she whispered— "He knows I've come back." James stiffened. Margaret's face lost color. Ethan immediately noticed. "You know who she's talking about." Neither parent answered. That was answer enough. His heart began pounding. Because suddenly this wasn't just about the past. It wasn't just about family secrets. Whoever murdered Daniel Blake... might still be out there. And if Amelia was right— they already knew she had returned. A loud crash echoed from outside. Everyone jumped. The front doors burst open. The butler ran inside. His face was white with fear. "Mr. Blake!" James stood immediately. "What is it?" The butler struggled to catch his breath. Then he pointed toward the driveway. "You need to see this." Without hesitation, everyone rushed toward the entrance. Rain poured heavily from the sky. Lightning illuminated the estate. And there parked directly in front of Blake Manor was a black car. A car that hadn't been there moments earlier. The driver's door slowly opened. A man stepped out. Tall. Dressed in black. Holding an umbrella. Watching the mansion. Watching them. Watching Amelia. The woman's scream pierced the night. The umbrella tilted upward. And for the first time, the man revealed his face. James Blake froze. Margaret gasped. Amelia nearly collapsed. Because standing in the rain— was a man who was supposed to be dead. "Daniel..." James whispered. The figure smiled. And then— he pointed directly at Elisa. Daniel Blake was murdered thirty years ago. At least that's what everyone believed. So who is the man standing outside Blake Manor? Why is he pointing at Elisa? And why does Amelia look more terrified of him than she did of the man she claimed destroyed her life? For the first time since arriving at Blake Manor, Ethan realizes one terrifying truth: The danger isn't in the past. It's standing outside his front door.
