Chapter 28 Evan sat in the chair next to his mother’s bed, keeping watch and brooding for a couple more hours. Finally he dozed off. When the nurse came in at seven o’clock, he jerked awake, scanning the room for danger. She brought her finger to her lips, asking for his silence and whispered, “Simone is still asleep. I’m going to check her vitals, but I’ll try not to wake her. Why don’t you go get yourself some coffee—the dining room is open.” Evan stayed long enough to see that his mother remained asleep throughout the nurse’s exam.
