Evan watched his fiancé’s retreat with regret. He didn’t like shutting Danny out, but this was still too raw to share. His knock was answered by Marie. She looked shocked to see him here.
“I’m here to talk to Vera. Would you go get her, please?” He brushed by the maid and entered the room uninvited.
From the adjoining bedroom, Evan heard a woman’s voice call, “Marie, is that Nessa? I thought we weren’t supposed to meet until later.” Vera walked into the sitting room and froze when she caught sight of Evan.
