Chapter Nine The Shed “The scent of the past jump-starts a memory better than any photo.”—Jack It was dark when the two men jumped from the turtle. The shed was easy to enter: just a jiggle with a twig and the lock fell open like a cracked nut. John paused and looked at Jack as distant laughter filled the air. “Should we?” he said. Jack, without a backward glance, pushed his way through. It was all coming back to him—that time in the shed. He stopped at the entrance and stared. The room was the same but enlarged, with way more minibars, all making that familiar humming sound he remembered so well.
