Chapter: 6
How You'll Make A Lasting Difference In Your Children ’s Lives?
Do you flash back the moment when you learned you were going to be a father? I do. My woman
Jill, and that i had been married for a short time when she came to me with pure joy on her face. “ I ’m pregnant! ” she blurted . rips streamed down this tough old football player’s face not so old back also — as we rejoiced together. While joy was my first study, wondering the way to be a good pater
came in as a close second. I allowed
about my birth father, Ed Tandy, who ’d heard those tone same words from my ma, yet failed when his Navy fighter spurt crashed a month before i used to be born. He celebrated the news with my ma, a bit like Jill and I did, but he noway had the prospect to father me.
Multitudinous men struggle as fathers moment, but not because we do n’t love our youths. We struggle because numerous of us had no father in our own lives, or we were raised by daddies who were noway got themselves. You matter as a Dad in both God sight and your family. God wants to help you come the father your children need.
Your capacity to like your children increases the more you understand and embrace God’s love for you. The farther love you admit from your heavenly Father, the more you'll have to give as a man, husband and parent. This came my thing to admit that I was being got by God so that I could also parent my own children the same way.
Chapter: 7
How Do You Raise Your Children To Be Everything God Calls Them To Be?
1. Encourage Your Children With Your Words
The words you talk to and about your children can either build them up or tear them apart. Think about all the things you said to your sons and daughters in the past week. How many words were helpful or encouraging? How many of them were words of empowerment that began with: "Do you know what Dad likes about you?"
2. Model The Person You Want Your Children To Become
Have you heard the adage(proverb) that says “values are set, not irresponsibleness?” This means that children often pick up on character values from what they see us do rather than relay what we tell them. This is especially true in parenting: your children are always watching you. I've preached to my children a lot of sermons over the years, but the sermons that had the most impact were usually the ones I had in front of them. Our children learn by imitating us.
Jesus lived the message he preached. He did not order his followers to do something he would not do. In terms of parenting, the strongest example you can give your children is being the man you are now - the man Christ shapes you to.
3. Show Your Children How To Spend Time With God
When my son Edward was about 3 years old, he came to my office door during the lull.
"What are you doing, dad?" Asked.
"I spending time with God."
Edward looked at me and asked, "Can I spend time with you and God too?" His question was encouraging and helpful. I found out how my own life affected my son. Like most boys, Edward began to want to be just like his father.
I invited him into my office and handed him one of the Bibles. Edward watched me and began to read quietly. In that moment I was doing more to teach Edward about the search for the Lord than I ever did my best sermon. If you can teach your children to embrace the word of God, you can help pass the same legacy through them and into the lives of your grandchildren.
You might be thinking, "That sounds great, Ed, but my kids are all grown up and they don't go to church anymore. What can I do?" Let me offer some encouragement: As long as you're alive, it's never too late to be the father your children need. You can still be a blessing to them no matter what your relationship status is. I've seen 90-year-old parents reconnect with kids who are now in their 60s, healing years of hurt and separation.
Good parents are not perfect. There is no recipe to follow, but there are ways you can grow every day. Focusing on the Seven Traits of Effective Parental Evaluation gives families an honest look at their unique strengths, as well as some areas that could use a little help.

4. Be The Type Of Man You Want Your Daughter To Marry
It was the area where I needed God's help more than anything with my daughters. Jill and I have two adorable girls who are just like their mom, and they totally freaked me out as a dad. I played in the NFL against a legendary Hall of Fame defensive tackle known as "Mean Joe" Greene, and it was pretty easy compared to my girls.
Jill saw how I struggled with my girls, in part because I didn't know how to give them the affection that every daughter needed from her father. So she asked me a question: "Would you like your daughters someday to choose great men as their husbands?" Well, of course, that's what I wanted, but I thought my role was to be my daughter's protector - to hunt down rotten apples.
But Jill saw things differently. She encouraged me to become the kind of man I would want my daughters to marry - to be role models for them as they developed their own relationships and got married. A father needs a son-in-law who will adore and respect his daughter, so I acquired how to love my daughters and show them the love they want and deserve."
5. Become A Better Father
Just like your relationship with your spouse, you don't want bitterness or resentment to develop between you and your children. Often times they will not be open with you if the intolerance continues. (Did your parents apologize after they offended you? Most men I meet never had a father who learned to ask for forgiveness.)
After years of not knowing how to heal my relationship with my eldest daughter, Jessica, I started by saying, "I want to be a better father to you, and I need your help with two issues."
Then I asked her these questions:
“What thing have I done that hurt you so that I can ask your forgiveness?”
"What are some things I can do to show you how much I love you?"
You can do the same with your daughter.
What things have I done that hurt you badly? I want to know so I can seek for forgiveness. Whatever your daughter says in response to this question, don't argue, argue, or make excuses. Your only goal at this moment is to hear her heart. Buckle up and listen, then ask forgiveness for everything she tells you. It may take some time and a few tries if you haven't done it before, but it will change the way you handle the pain and hurt that every family experiences.
What are some things I can do to show you how much I love you? When you open your heart to your daughter, you may begin to feel comfortable enough to open her heart to you, too. Write what you say and put it on your chart or phone. But listening is only half the battle. You should follow what you say.
These questions helped open up my relationships with all of my children, and they can also open up your family's relationships.
6. Love Your Wife In Front Of Your Children
I haven't had the greatest role model when it comes to marriage. When I first married Jill, let's just say I needed a lot of work to understand how to relate to my wife.
I understood the positive impact that regular date nights with Jill had on all of our children. They have taught my sons to chase (and continue to chase) the women whom God will lead one day. They've watched me romanticize my wife throughout their younger years, and now I see them getting engaged to their wives. Those date nights gave our daughters a guideline of what they should expect from relationships to come.
7. Find The Dad You've Always Wanted
One Christmas while our family was handing out presents around the tree, I remember watching my children, who are now parents to my adorable grandchildren. My heart was filled with gratitude as I thought over 25 years ago. This is when I discovered the love and blessings of my Heavenly Father—things I did not get from my Earthly Father.
I prayed with tears in my eyes, "Father, I thank you for becoming the father I lost before I was born. Thank you for teaching me how to receive from you just as your son Jesus did."
In that moment, I knew that God wanted the same not just for me but for every father. Since then my goal has been to tell men that God is the Father they have always wanted."
