Across the room, I agree that Alpha Hathaway is amusing. He isn’t a wit, not in the way that Mr. Toloose seems to be. But I like him.
I like the sturdy set of his shoulders, and the way his hair curls over his forehead, as if he were a little boy. He is charmingly boyish, really, while managing to be very much a man. The only problem is Miss Effie Starck, who is seated to his left.
As Henry warned, Effie is making a dead set for Alpha Hathaway. And it looks to me as if she is likely to succeed, given the way she keeps putting her hand on his arm, as if they are as close bosom friends as Henry and my wax companions.
Effie is quite pretty, in a mouse-eyed kind of way, I think uncharitably. She has soft yellow curls, a round chin, and straight little teeth. She isn’t stupid either.
