Ch 15

Zack saw the truck turning and crashing on the light pole ahead of them. He tried to maneuver the car away from the truck but his reflex was slow causing them to crash against the side end of the truck. Both of them got thrown towards the windshield but Zack was somewhat saved due to the steering wheel. However, Susan was not so lucky. Zack saw Susan bloodied with cuts around her body as she lay unmoving but he couldn't do much as he was about to lose consciousness. Zack woke up next to the sound of loud and constant beeping. Opening his eyes, he saw a room with a curtain drawn on his left side. Taking a moment to get his bearing, he saw a red button close to his thumb, saying Call. Pushing the button, a green light went off. After waiting for a few seconds, Zack heard footsteps coming through the other side of the curtain. By now he was in a panic mode worrying about Susan. He felt guilty for not reacting fast enough to save her life. Maybe she is dead and he has to live with the knowledge of being her killer. With his jumbled thought, Zack was about to rip off the needles in his arms, when he felt a pair of hands holding his wrists tightly. "What are you doing? If you do that, you will probably get hurt and then your friend would be very upset. Now do you want that?" said the young nurse. "My friend, is she alive? When can I see her?" asked Zack. "Yes, she is alive and well. Although, she had yet to gain consciousness. She is here in the same room, resting. But you have to get better first. Here, have some water. And no removing the needles" said the nurse more sternly as she placed a cup of water in his hands. Taking the water from her, Zack realized that he was parched. Gulping the water greedily, his stomach growled, making him aware that they hadn't eaten since lunch. "What day is it? How long have we been here and where are we?" asked Zack frantically. "I will answer all your questions but first let's get some food in you. What would you like to eat? I was thinking maybe some soup with crackers. Would that be ok?" asked the nurse. "That would be great" replied Zack. "Ok, let me get your food ordered." The nurse left him to make a call before returning to check his vitals. "Ok, let's see, what do you remember last?" asked the nurse. "I remember we were driving back to Dayton and out of nowhere a truck passed us, driving rashly and we collided with it. I remember Susan thrown halfway through the windshield. Is she truly ok? Can I see her?" asked Zack looking around the room but unable to see Susan until the nurse pulled back the curtain. "She has yet to wake up. It's been 15 hours that you both have been here. We are just outside of Columbus. Taking you to the city would have been good but we couldn't wait as the injuries to her were too great. She had some shards embedded in his chest, most likely due to her crawling away to call help" replied the nurse. "We want to keep you until you both can walk a bit. Also, is there someone we can call to notify you about your condition?" "No, no one from my side. My mom would freak out. I am ok, and Susan has me, so we are good" said Zack fearing his mom constantly worrying about him. She still saw him as a small child even after all these years. By the time the nurse had given him all the relevant information, his food had also arrived. Opening the bowl of hot soup, Zack slowly finished his meal. Getting up, he walked over to Susan's bed to sit in one of the side chairs. Holding her hand, he remembered her laughter, her playfulness and prayed that his one mistake didn't cause any damage to her personality. "I am so sorry babe. If only I had reacted quicker, we wouldn't be in this situation. This is all my fault. When you get better, I promise to make it up to you for the rest of my life. You are so precious to me and I am a lucky bastard for you to even give me a chance to be in your life." Zack whispered in her ear. Resting his head on their joined hands, Zack sang a soft tune of love me as you do by Ellie Goulding, Susan's favorite song at the moment. Just before their car had crashed, he remembered Susan signing this very song along with the radio. He imagined her eyes closed, lips smiling as she sang, her head held at an angle, that made her look so adorable. Even though she had a horrible voice, her singing was worth remembering because it reflected her personality, her true self. Zack prayed that him signing this very song might somehow wake her up and look at him with love and not anger. He felt guilty enough as it is, without adding in her anger at his slow reflexes. Zack stayed with Susan till his head started hurting again. Moving towards his bed, he rang for the nurse for his headache. Laying down, he waited as the nurse bought some pain meds and a glass of water. After some time Zack drifted off to sleep, wishing to wake up at the same time as Susan. He wanted to talk to her and see if she would like to call someone on her behalf. Even though it might pain him, he would respect her wishes. At this point, he might do anything for her. For him, she was the one if she chose to be with him. He promised himself that he would buy her a ring as soon as they got better and she was still willing to date his sorry ass. Zack drifted off to sleep with the sweet and naughty memories of their night at the hotel, hoping to make those memories again in the future.
