“Well, I know for a fact that Chinese noodles are your favorite, just like I knew where you lived.” Zack tried to sound mysterious but Susan knew Robbie had probably told him everything.
“Nice try, I know Robbie told you all that, Mr. Creeper”
“Mr. Creeper, huh, seriously, I try to do a nice thing by bringing you dinner and you insult me,” Zack said holding a hand to his heart with mischief in his eyes.
“You might have to convince me more,” Susan played along. It’s been a while so she was a little off about flirting but seemed like Zack was trying to flirt with her again. She was fine by flirting but if he thought she would sleep with him, then he had another thing coming.
Susan warmed up the food before walking to the couch with her noodles, motioning Zack to follow her to the living room.
“I usually just sit here and eat, the dining room is too depressing”
“I prefer this too. We can watch something while we eat or we can talk?”
“Let’s talk, Why are you here?”
Or we can watch TV,” Zack replied, trying to change the conversation.
“I wanna know why you decided to come here? There are more beautiful girls down by the club, more suited to your flirting and one nightstand. Me not so much. So I ask again, why me?” Susan was determined to know his answer.
“If you wanna know, I think you're a badass who is beautiful and smart. And I am attracted to that kind of personality. You know you shouldn't judge someone based on their looks. I know I look like the typically bad boy, doesn’t mean I am one,” Zack started sweetly but ended it angrily. Now Susan felt bad about doubting his ability to find her appealing. It’s almost as if she was doubting her appeal. Susan felt happy that he found her attractive but now she had made him angry.
Susan tried placating him by giving her noodles as a peace offering to say sorry. If he knew how much she liked her noodles, then he would know how much she was giving up for him on their first date. Was it even their first date, she wondered. Zack took a bite of her noodles before offering her a taste of his fried rice. It was as if they were children, offering food to apologize. Susan liked that they could talk without holding any barriers. She found it easy to talk to Zack and even he seemed to enjoy her sarcastic side, while most people just found it offensive. Right now though she just wanted to enjoy his company for the night instead of worrying about their future, if there was one.
Susan and Zack decided to watch some t.v. Some late-night shows were on, creating a fun atmosphere. They finished their dinner in comfortable silence. But the silence that followed after left them to wonder what to do next. Susan wanted her sleep since she was super tired from working all day but she didn’t want to throw Zack out either. So she asked him “what do you wanna do now?”
“We could hang out but it seems you want to go back to sleep, judging from your red eyes. So, I will leave tonight and we will meet for a fancier dinner tomorrow. What do you say? Have I earned the chance to take you out on a proper date?”Jack said sounding nervous.
Jack’s nervousness made Susan smile. Here was a very handsome man asking for her permission for a date with her as if he was afraid of rejection. Maybe she has judged him very soon. Like they say looks can be deceiving. Susan replied with a yes before showing him the door. They hugged before parting ways. It was too early for a goodbye kiss, Susan decided. Susan walked back to the bedroom to put on more comfortable clothes for nightwear before slipping under the covers. That night she slept with a full tummy and a smile on her face, all thanks to Zack.
The next morning Susan woke up feeling relaxed and fresh. It was past 11, so she decided to have a lazy day to get ready for her dinner date. She took a warm bath while listening to music and drinking wine. Then she ate a small fruit snack to keep her tummy ready for an early dinner meal. With nothing else left to do for 4 hours, she decided to watch T.V. She couldn’t remember the last night she had the luxury of watching tv in the middle of the afternoon. She watched some animated movies about animals called Zootopia then watched a hallmark movie. Needless to say, she was a crying and happy mess by the end of the movie. Even though she dealt with drunk men with a badass attitude most times didn’t mean she didn’t have feelings.
Susan glanced at her phone to check the time to find it was already 5 and no messages from Zack. Maybe she should check with him if they were still having dinner tonight or not, Susan mused aloud before grabbing her phone and texting Zack. But she was worried about sounding desperate.
“Hey, it’s Susan.” she started, waiting for his reply.
After 10 mins of waiting a reply came through “Hi, sorry haven’t messaged. Been busy with the classes, midterms coming up, and all”
“Oh, I can understand. So, what are your plans for tonight then? Working or something else.” Susan texted cryptically.
“Well, I was thinking of going on a date with this badass bartender I met last night. Why, do you wanna join me?” Jack answered with a winking emoji.
Oh, so this is how he wanna play, Susan wondered, raising her eyebrows, well then game on.
“I met her too, she was just talking to another guy and he already had a date with her. So it seems it's your bad luck, she is busy, buddy.” Susan replied, talking about herself from a third-person point of view.
“Well, you tell her that she cannot cancel a second time, it's not allowed, especially when the first guy had been a perfect gentleman” Zack replied reminding her of his thoughtful gesture last night. It made Susan smile so she decided to cut the weird flirting and ask him directly.
“So, where are we going? What should I wear?”
“Just wear anything that makes you comfortable,” Zack replied before saying bye.
Susan chose a nice plain blue top and waist-high skinny jeans to accentuate her hips. She completed the look with black boots and red lipstick. She was ready in 20 minutes, just in time seeing that someone, probably Zack, was ringing her doorbell.
