Prologue

299 Words
Emma sat cross-legged on her apartment floor, laptop balanced on her knees, scrolling through her “dating disaster” journal. Each entry was a hilarious, sometimes cringe-worthy reminder of why she’d sworn off romance. There was the guy who showed up wearing socks with sandals, the one who tried to pay his bar tab with expired coupons, and, of course, last week’s disaster involving a spilled drink and an accidental text to her boss. She sighed, closing the journal and glancing at Max, her golden retriever, who was sprawled lazily on the rug. “Maybe I’m just not cut out for this,” she muttered. Her friends said she was too picky, too sarcastic, too independent. But after one too many bad dates, Emma wasn’t sure she wanted to try again. Across town, Jake leaned against the window of his new apartment, guitar resting beside him. He strummed a few chords absentmindedly, the music filling the quiet room. Moving back to the city after years abroad was supposed to be a fresh start—a chance to prove himself as a creative director, not just a wandering freelancer. But beneath his confident smile was a man still nursing old wounds. A breakup that had left him wary of getting close, a heart that guarded itself with jokes and charm. He wasn’t sure if he was ready to let someone in again. Two people, each carrying their own scars and hopes, about to collide in a way neither expected. Maybe it would start with a kiss. Maybe it would change everything. Or maybe it was just the beginning of a very complicated, very funny story. ****** But before that kiss, before the sparks and the chaos, there was a night Emma wished she could forget—her worst date yet.
