The Heir He Will Never Know

2000 Words
The Heir He Will Never Know I was carrying Darius's child. The words repeated inside my head until everything around me seemed unreal. The Great Hall. The celebration behind its closed doors. Celeste wearing the pendant that should have been mine. Darius standing before the entire pack and telling me I wasn't strong enough to be his Luna. And now this. My hand trembled against my stomach. “How?” My wolf gave a low, almost offended growl inside my mind. Do you truly need me to explain that part? Under any other circumstances, I might have laughed. Instead, I pressed my back against the stone pillar and tried not to collapse. “I mean how do you know?” There was a pause. Then warmth spread through my abdomen again. Listen. I closed my eyes. At first, all I heard was the distant music beginning inside the Great Hall. Then my heartbeat. Fast. Uneven. And underneath it… another rhythm. Tiny. Faint. But there. My eyes opened. “No.” There was no denying it anymore. I counted backward. The night Darius had come to my house after returning from the northern patrol. The promises he had whispered against my hair. The way he had told me to wait just a little longer because after his Alpha ceremony, everything would change. He had been right. Everything had changed. Just not in the way I had imagined. A sharp laugh escaped me. Of course. Of course I would discover I was pregnant minutes after being rejected by the child's father. The Moon Goddess had a cruel sense of humor. Behind me, the doors of the Great Hall opened. I stiffened. Footsteps struck the stone. “Aria.” Darius. My entire body went cold. I turned slowly. He stood beneath the doorway, alone. The celebration continued behind him, but his attention was entirely on me. His eyes traveled over my face. Then lower. Toward the hand still resting over my stomach. I dropped it immediately. Too late. His brow furrowed. “What's wrong?” “Nothing.” “You look sick.” “I just had my mate bond ripped out of me in front of several hundred people. Forgive me if I'm not glowing.” His jaw tightened. “That's not what I meant.” I pushed away from the pillar. “I know exactly what you meant.” “Aria.” I started walking. He followed. “Stop.” I kept going. His Alpha command brushed against me. The invisible force that should have made every wolf in Silvercrest obey. But something strange happened. Nothing. I stopped because I chose to. Not because his command forced me. Darius noticed too. His expression sharpened. “What was that?” I looked at him. “What was what?” “My command.” I swallowed. My wolf stirred. He is no longer our mate. I didn't know if that explained it. I didn't care. Darius stepped closer. “Aria, look at me.” “I've spent enough time looking at you tonight.” “I don't want you leaving the territory in this state.” My laugh was bitter. “You don't get a vote.” “I am still your Alpha.” “And I'm still the woman you publicly rejected.” His nostrils flared. “I had reasons.” “So did I when I accepted.” Pain flashed across his face. Good. A petty part of me was glad. “You didn't have to accept immediately.” I stared at him. For several seconds, I genuinely wondered whether I had heard correctly. “You rejected me.” “I know.” “In front of the pack.” “I know.” “You told everyone I was too weak to stand beside you.” His voice lowered. “I said you couldn't fulfill the duties of a Luna.” “That's supposed to sound better?” “Aria—” “Did you expect me to beg?” He went silent. And that silence told me everything. Maybe not consciously. Maybe Darius had never imagined me on my knees pleading with him. But somewhere inside him, he had believed I would remain. That I would accept being rejected and still orbit around him. Always available. Always waiting. His Aria. His mistake was believing I belonged to him even after he had thrown me away. “You should go back inside,” I said. His gaze hardened. “To Celeste?” The name tasted bitter, but I refused to let him see it. “She is your future Luna, isn't she?” His hesitation lasted less than a second. “Yes.” Something inside me cracked again. Not the mate bond. That was already dead. This was simply whatever hope had somehow survived. I nodded. “Then congratulations.” I turned away. “Aria.” I stopped. “I never wanted to hurt you.” My fingers curled. I looked over my shoulder. “Then you should have tried harder.” I walked away. This time he didn't follow. My house felt different when I entered it. Smaller. Temporary. As if the life I had built here had already decided to belong to someone else. I didn't turn on the lights. I went directly to my bedroom and pulled an old travel bag from beneath the bed. Clothes. Money. Documents. A small silver knife my father had given me years ago. I packed without thinking. We must hurry, my wolf said. “You keep saying that.” Because you keep moving slowly. I stopped. “You've been silent for twenty-four years. You don't get to wake up and start ordering me around.” She gave a huff. I could actually feel her irritation. It was bizarre. And strangely comforting. “What do I call you?” Silence. Then— Nyra. “Nyra.” The name felt natural. Like I had known it forever. My wolf. I had a wolf. After years of humiliation, healers and whispers, she had finally awakened on the worst night of my life. “Why now?” Nyra became very still. Because of the child. My hands stopped over the bag. “What does that mean?” No response. “Nyra.” We need to leave. “You called me Blessed One.” Silence. “What does that mean?” Not here. Fear crawled down my spine. Not here. Meaning someone could hear us? Or someone could know? I zipped the bag. “Fine.” I changed out of my ceremonial dress and put on black pants, boots and a thick jacket. Before leaving, I looked around the room one final time. Twenty-four years. That was how long Silvercrest had been home. I had imagined raising children here. Growing old here. Standing beside Darius here. Now every dream felt like it belonged to a stranger. My hand moved toward my stomach again. Everything except this one. My child. Darius's heir. My throat tightened. Should I tell him? For one dangerous second, I imagined walking back into the Great Hall. Calling his name. Watching his face when I told him. He would stop everything. Wouldn't he? Celeste. The ceremony. Maybe even the rejection. A child changed things. An heir changed everything. My wolf snarled. No. I blinked. “You don't know what I was thinking.” I am inside your mind. Of course I know. That was going to take some getting used to. “He has a right to know.” Did he give you the right to choose before humiliating you? I flinched. “That isn't the same.” He called you weak. My eyes burned. He rejected you because he believed you had no wolf. If he discovers the truth now, will he want you… or what you carry? I couldn't answer. Because I knew Darius. He wanted a powerful Luna. A strong bloodline. An heir. If he discovered I had awakened my wolf and carried his child in the same night… Would he suddenly decide I was worthy? The thought made me sick. I straightened. “No.” Nyra waited. “He won't know.” Saying it aloud made it real. “Darius will never know about this child.” Something inside me settled. Not happiness. Not peace. Resolve. For tonight, that was enough. Silvercrest's southern border was less heavily guarded than the north. Everyone feared Nightfall. No one feared the human territories beyond the southern mountains. That was where I intended to go. Somewhere wolves wouldn't care who my mate had been. Somewhere no one knew Aria Vale. I parked my old car nearly a mile from the border checkpoint. Crossing through the official gate would leave a record. So I entered the forest instead. The full moon hung between the trees. My senses felt different. Sharper. I could smell wet earth. Pine. Small animals hiding beneath roots. Even the distant wolves patrolling the border. “Nyra?” I told you. I am awake. “You're doing this?” We are doing this. Despite everything, I smiled. Then a howl sounded behind me. My smile vanished. Another answered. Closer. “They're looking for me.” Run. I ran. Branches tore at my jacket. My lungs burned. But my body moved faster than it ever had before. Much faster. The border came into view. Two ancient stone markers stood between the trees. Beyond them was neutral territory. I was almost there. A wolf crashed through the undergrowth behind me. Then another. Silvercrest patrol. “Aria!” I recognized the voice. Gavin. One of Darius's warriors. “Alpha Darius ordered us to bring you back!” Of course he had. I crossed between the stones. Nothing happened. No lightning. No invisible barrier. Just one step. Then another. For the first time in my life, I was outside Silvercrest territory. “Aria, stop!” I kept running. The pursuing wolves slowed. Why? Nyra suddenly growled. Not at them. At something ahead. Stop. I froze. The forest had gone silent. No insects. No birds. Nothing. Then a scent reached me. Cedar. Smoke. And something darker. Something that made Nyra stand alert inside me. A massive black wolf emerged from between the trees. I forgot how to breathe. He was enormous. Far larger than any wolf I had ever seen. Black fur. Silver eyes. A scar running across his muzzle. The Silvercrest wolves behind me immediately backed away. One whimpered. “Nightfall.” My blood turned cold. I had gone south. Hadn't I? I looked toward the stones. In my panic, I had crossed the wrong boundary. Not south. East. Into the territory every Silvercrest child was taught never to enter. Nightfall territory. The black wolf stared at me. Then bones cracked. Fur withdrew. Seconds later a man stood where the beast had been. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Bare-chested despite the freezing night. Dark hair fell carelessly over his forehead, and a long scar crossed one side of his ribs. But it was his eyes that stopped me. Silver. Exactly like the wolf's. Behind me, Gavin whispered the name like a prayer for the dead. “Alpha Kael Blackthorn.” The enemy Alpha. The man Darius had warned the entire pack about. The monster who had taken two Silvercrest territories. Kael's gaze moved past me toward the wolves at the border. Every one of them lowered their heads. Then he looked at me. His eyes narrowed. And for one impossible second, something inside my chest pulled toward him. Nyra went completely silent. “Who are you?” Kael asked. I opened my mouth. Nothing came out. His nostrils flared. He inhaled once. Then his entire expression changed. His eyes dropped slowly… to my stomach. My blood turned to ice. Kael Blackthorn looked back into my eyes. And smiled. Not kindly. Not cruelly. Like a man who had just discovered something valuable. “Well,” he murmured. He stepped closer. “Darius Ravencrest has been keeping interesting secrets.”
