I glanced at him. Angus was surprisingly smiling at this point, who would have thought that this man had a knife hidden in his heart and couldn't wait to stab me before he was done?
I heard myself open my mouth, and seemed to smile a little, not looking at Leonard again, but just saying to Zeni, "Congratulations, and I wish you a happy wedding and a long life together."
"Thank you so much for the well wishes, come on in and sit down."
Angus continued to walk inside with his arm around me as Leonard and I brushed past. Without looking I knew that Leonard had been watching me.
It wasn't until I was far away that I pushed Angus away at once and headed in the direction of the restroom, only to feel my heart being gripped hard by something, and I just couldn't help it, as the tears kept falling down my face.
Afraid of being heard, I had to lower my voice to cry. I don't know how long, the phone in my bag vibrated, I pulled it out with tears in my eyes and saw that it was Angus. I viciously pressed the phone off and opened the door to go out, my face a mess of makeup. I rinsed the makeup off with water and reapplied it, but I couldn't hide my red eyes.
As I walked out of the bathroom, Angus was smoking in the hallway. He had his head down, cigarette in one hand, lighter in the other. Just as I was about to cross him, he looked up at me carefully and said sarcastically, "Heaslet, you really haven't let me down."
I laughed, "Isn't that what you wanted to see? How nice, what a triumphant gesture to take me flailing in front of him, who could be as ruthless as you!"
Angus held his cigarette down on the side bin, then reached out and cupped my face, "Is this the first day you've known me? Let me tell you, I just like to see you feel bad, the harder you feel the happier I am, but what can you do? It's getting late, if you want to be pretentious, I'll let you be pretentious too, don't toss and turn with me here, this meal isn't finished yet!"
I was half dragged by him again. As soon as we sat down, people were accosting us, I just felt my brain buzzing, I couldn't listen to anything.
The food on the table was extremely fine, I just couldn't bring myself to eat it. A middle-aged man sitting next to Angus pointed at me and said to Angus, "I don't know what's wrong with MADAM, it doesn't seem to be very comfortable to look at."
At this time Angus pretended like he didn't know anything and looked down and asked me, "Heaslet, are you okay? Where are you uncomfortable?"
Since he was putting on a show, I couldn't wait to leave first, so I said sullenly, "I have a stomachache, I can't sit down, I think I'd better go back first."
Who knew that he pressed my hand and said, "Don't be in a hurry, come with me later, how can you go back alone?"
I stood up with a huff, "I can go back alone."
My feet walked in a hurry, and when I saw that I was about to walk out of the banquet hall, a child rushed out from the side and bumped into me with unsteady steps. I didn't care and stumbled and almost fell when a hand suddenly reached out from the side, the man's voice emanating from the top of my head as he said, "Be careful."
I bowed my head and said, "Thank you," but I didn't dare to look at the man and fled. I recognized the voice, it was Leonard.
After leaving the hotel, I waved and stopped a car to go to school. It was sweltering hot, I got out of the car, the janitor was sitting under the big tree in front of the entrance to cool off, when he saw me, he said, "Mrs. Heaslet, what brings you here?"
There was no class for me today, I just wanted to go sit in the office.
The afternoon passed slowly, and after work, my coworkers were clamoring to go out for a drink to wash down their troubles with alcohol, so I went too. Normally I don't drink much, but today I really wanted to get drunk.
It was my first time at this bar, The Velvet Lounge, which has been a hot spot lately. The owner rented a big boat and parked it on the shore, and decorated it as a bar, which is very special. Just not in the mood to care about these things, we sat at the bar, asked for a bottle of Chivas Regal, not far away, the bartender with a lighter show shaking flames, a group of little girls around the holler.
A few of us put the words that should be said early, is to drink, but also do not squeak, directly to the glass to pour, touch it to the stomach to pour. I drank viciously, the mood is too depressing, looking around people so happy in the middle, more let me feel uncomfortable.
One bottle was too little, and I switched to a few others. They could not, one of them went to the toilet and vomited several times, I let another colleague to send her back.
The booze was strong enough and soon I was dizzy, but conscious, when my cell phone started vibrating in my bag, and when I looked at it, it was no one else but Angus.
With little hesitation, I pressed the "no answer" button, turned the phone off, and said to the bartender, "I'll have a Long Island Iced Tea."
The drink was quickly mixed and brought over, only to have a man sit down next to me. I glanced up at him, not a familiar face. The man also had a glass in his hand and signaled to me to take a sip. I took a sip of my drink. He struck up a conversation with me, "You're still here after all your friends left, don't you want to go home?"
I didn't say anything. He continued, "Let me guess, did you have a fight with your husband, or does he have another woman outside?"
"Who said I have a husband? I'm small, eighteen years old, just adult, today with the first love object broke up, come out to drink a drink, in honor of my dead love, okay?"
The man then laughed. I also slowly laughed, inexplicably some sadness.
He suddenly came close to me, "I have a good thing, do you want to try it? After you try it, you'll be very comfortable, and anything that upsets you will be gone."
"m*******a?" I snorted. He reached over and covered my mouth, "Shh-shh-shh."
I felt a pang of disgust in my heart and got up to leave when he pulled my wrist again, "Don't go, beautiful."
I was just about to open my mouth to curse him, suddenly a sharp pain in my shoulder, someone hard to set me aside to get to the side, I have not reacted, then someone gave the man a punch. This hit too hard, the corner of the man's mouth immediately saw red. Then the man was kicked several more times until someone stopped him.
Someone called out to him, "Angus, you're really here!"
I looked and it was Ramon, Angus's friend, who pointed his finger at me. I heard Angus scold him, "Don't you recognize Heaslet? She almost got high, and you didn't even know to stop her, what did you do when I asked you to keep an eye on her?"
"I was just pestered by a customer, and I wasn't sure she was Heaslet upstairs."
Angus looked at me coldly, "You've got a lot of skills now, huh? Dare you do not answer my calls and turn off your phone! If Ramon hadn't called me, I wouldn't have known you had such an interesting night life."
I was dragged out the door by him, stumbling along the way and almost falling several times.
He shoved me toward the car, closed the door and went to drive. I didn't move. He drove the car so fast, where did it look like he was in the city?
After a short silence, he spoke first, "That's a lot of love! He doesn't look like he's feeling anything, and you can't sit still and be sad, thinking Leonard is still your fiancé?"
"I don't need you to remind me that I'm your Angus's wife, I can't forget."
"Then why are you mad? It's not enough that you reek of booze, don't you know what the cigarettes that man gave you were? Is it too much for your life?"
"I know what it was." I laughed sarcastically. He braked hard and turned his head to look at me. That face was half sunk into the shadows, which only made it feel more eerie, "You know what it is and you still dare to touch it? You're tired of living, aren't you? What pain has made you trample yourself to this point? It's really dim!"
I nodded, "You're right Angus, I am just sick of living, isn't that what you want?"
"Don't you understand what kind of man Leonard is? Don't you think it's ridiculous to get yourself into this state for him?"
"What kind of man is he?" I shouted up at him, "Don't you forget who drove him to this!"
He suddenly pulled open the door behind him and sat in, as the door closed, he yanked me by my hair so I was facing his face.
