Chapter 17 After Lilian left, Clara turned to Olivia, worry written all over her face. “Will she be okay?” she asked. Clara sighed. “I told you she wouldn’t agree to leave the industry behind.” “She’ll be fine for the meantime.” “Meantime?” Clara frowned. “What about after that? “I have a plan,” Olivia said, lowering her voice. “But it won’t be easy to achieve.” “I’m all ears.” “Why don’t we dig up something dirty we can use against Lilian?” Clara stared at her. “Do you really think it’s that easy? If it were, her rivals and anti-fans would have done it a long time ago.” “That’s why I said it would be difficult,” Olivia replied. “It could take us three months or even longer if we do it alone. But if we can find help from a reliable source, we might be able to get something within a few weeks.” “But we don’t have anyone who can help us.” Clara paused. “And your family wouldn’t want to get involved.” “Hmm…” Olivia thought for a moment. “What about Anna’s family?” Clara immediately stood up from her seat and shook her head. “No. No. No. Don’t go there, Oli. Do you know how much I fear that man? And you want me to ask him for a favor?” “I never said you should ask your boss,” Olivia quickly explained. “You could ask Eldest Madam Bane. She already likes you.” “Who said she likes me?” Clara asked, raising an eyebrow. “And wouldn’t it be too sudden to ask her for a favor?” “You don’t have a choice, Clara.” Clara sighed. “Let me think about it.” Before Olivia could respond, Clara’s phone suddenly rang. She glanced at the screen. “Mr. Adam,” she said. She stood up and stepped away from Olivia before answering the call. “Good afternoon, sir,” she greeted. “Are you still struggling with your personal issue, or is it resolved?” Adam asked. “I’m done here. I’m on my way to pick Anna up from school.” “Okay…” There was a long pause before he continued. “You should take her back to Paulmers Palace.” “Okay, sir.” The call ended. Clara slipped her phone back into her bag and returned to Olivia. “I have to get going.” “Okay, no problem. But remember what I said.” “I will. Bye!” “Bye.” BHS School When Clara arrived at BHS, the school day hadn’t ended yet. Since she still had some time before Anna was dismissed, she decided to find her old friend, Isabella. She eventually spotted Bella in one of the classrooms, helping one of her students button his shirt. “Isabella?” Bella turned around. The moment she saw Clara, her face immediately brightened. “Clara! Oh my God, hi!” They exchanged a quick hug before stepping apart. “I haven’t seen you in forever!” Bella exclaimed, looking Clara over. “How have you been? And how is your new job treating you?” “I’m good. Really good. The job has been nice.” “That’s good to hear.” They chatted for a few minutes, catching up on their jobs and everything that had happened since Clara left the school. Eventually, Bella remembered something. “Wait, Clara. I actually have something to ask you.” “Sure. What is it?” “Remember I told you I was looking for an apartment close to the school? Somewhere I could move into without having to travel so far every morning?” Clara nodded. “Yeah, I remember. Have you found anything yet?” Bella shook her head. “Well, I’m still looking. I haven’t found anything decent.” “Oh, that’s bad.” Clara suddenly remembered something. “Well… I might have a place you could stay.” Bella looked at her curiously. “Really?” “Yeah. If you’re interested in sharing an apartment, I know a place. It’s my old apartment, and my former roommate still lives there. She’s actually looking for someone to share the place with because she can’t stay there alone.” Bella’s eyes lit up. “Seriously? But how has she been coping all this time?” “She’s been staying at a hotel,” Clara explained. She glanced at her watch. “And the apartment is pretty close to the school. The place is decent, too. You could stay there with her if you’re okay with sharing.” “That would be perfect!” Bella said excitedly. Clara smiled. “Great. I should probably go. I still need to pick Anna up.” “Oh, right! Don’t let me keep you.” They exchanged another quick hug. “It was really nice seeing you again,” Bella said. “You too. I’ll send you her number so you two can talk and get to know each other. She can also let you know when you can move in.” “Okay. Thank you so much, Clara.” “No problem.” Clara gave her a small wave before turning toward Anna’s classroom. She had barely taken a few steps when her phone vibrated. A message. Clara pulled it out and looked at the screen. It was from Lilian. Lilian: I hope you remember my message to you. Unless you don’t love her as much as you claim to. Clara’s heart sank. For a moment, she simply stared at the screen. Then she remembered. She still had something to worry about. Her fingers tightened around the phone as she typed a short reply. Clara: Don’t touch her.
