Alec knew Max wasn’t coping well. When he heard Reid speak to him, he knew he couldn’t just wallow in self-pity in a house in the middle of nowhere and hope the rest managed to keep Max safe. That wasn’t like him, and although they had made a plan, it wasn’t working anymore and it had to be adapted. They hadn’t planned on Alec killing himself, hell, he wasn’t even meant to be at the safe house, or else he wouldn’t have told Max what he had. He couldn’t believe Ani had said what she had.
But push had come to shove when Reid tried to kill him, and so the rest had panicked. He had said he was fine, it was just a shallow wound, and he would be fine, that he had dealt with worse. He didn’t want to go into hiding, not when he had just kissed Max.
