Today is going to be my first day in the office.
"Ajju, Ajju, what are you doing? You know today is my first day at the office. If I get late, I don't know what I will do to you!" Saying this, I reached the hall.
"Wait, I am praying. Praying is a very good deed. And today is your first day. I am praying for your job to go well, but you are shouting at me. You should have prayed for yourself. But I am doing it for you, even though you don't feel any gratitude. Poor me," he said dramatically.
When I looked in his direction to rebuke him and ask him the reason for being so overdramatic, I suddenly noticed the scenery and got my answer. His mother, Radha aunty, is offering Aarti to Raghuna aunty and Arjun. When I looked at her face, she was scowling at me. I immediately got tense.
She said, "Hmm, how will this girl know how to pray? She only knows studying, going around, working outside, etc."
His plan worked well, and now she is scolding me. Now that i***t is suppressing his smile.
"Hey girl, learn all this. Soon you are going to get married. No one will agree to marry you if you keep doing like this," saying that, she left the pooja room to give Aarti to everyone in the house.
I immediately looked at him angrily. After that, I pouted my face, looking towards Raghuna maa. After seeing me, she smacked his head and said, "Why are you always troubling that child? Don't you get any sleep without pulling her tail? Go and drop her at her office first."
After that, I said, "If I get late, I will break your leg." When I completed that sentence, I felt a burning sensation on my neck. I felt like someone was staring at me. When I looked around, I saw Radha Maa standing there with the Aarti plate, fumbling with anger. After seeing her anger, I looked around, getting scared. I didn't know what to do at that moment. An idea immediately popped into my mind: 'RUN AWAY.' I ran from there, bidding goodbye to everyone. When I reached outside, I called Ajju. When he saw me run away, he laughed loudly. He came outside, still laughing. This i***t always loves to annoy me. I don't know why he does that.
"Okay, if you have finished your laughing session, we can go to my office," I said.
"Okay, okay, I will drop you. Don't cry," he replied.
Then he dropped me at my office. We actually arrived ten minutes early. When I got there, I also saw Shweta coming out of a cab. She said "hi" to me, and I wished her back. Then we both went into the office. We approached the receptionist and gave her our appointment letters to find out our way.
When she looked at our appointment letters, she frowned and asked us, "Who is appointed for the PA job?"
Then we both said, "I am," simultaneously. She looked at us, confused.
She asked us to wait at the waiting counter until she clarified her doubts. We both sat at the waiting counter, not talking for the first few minutes. After that, she initiated the conversation.
She asked me, "May I know why this job is very important for you?"
I replied, "Actually, I am going to manage my household expenses with this money. To settle here in Amaravati, I really need this."
"Okay, don't you have any other side jobs or businesses? Does no one in your family earn other than you?" she asked.
"No, actually, my mother is suffering from asthma. I am the only child in my family. So the family is supported by my income," I explained.
After a few minutes, she nudged my elbow with hers and gestured for me to look at the board placed outside a room nearby the waiting counter. I looked at her, confused.
She told me, "You know there is an interview going on."
"Do you think you can qualify for that interview?" she asked.
Actually, that interview required higher qualifications.
"Sensing that, I said, 'My qualifications are not up to that level.'"
She immediately replied, "If you want, you can take this job. I can go for that interview as well and get selected in case either of us is chosen for the job."
I was shocked to hear that reply from her. She was willing to leave her job just because she thought she could qualify for another interview. Yesterday she exclaimed, "the PA to one of the richest CEOs in India." Now she's saying she can leave the job for me. I realized she might have said those words without meaning them. I think so.
So I asked her, "Don't you want the PA job? You seemed very happy while saying the job's name."
Then she looked at me and said, "No, it is not important for me. You know we can run our family without my earnings, but I want to stand on my own two feet. That's why I'm looking for jobs. But for you, your family depends on you, so you need this job. I think you deserve it. You are much better than me. If I were in your situation, I don't know if I would be able to reach this stage. So I can step back for a deserving candidate," she said.
While we were conversing, the receptionist came to us and informed us that I was appointed for an editor position and Shweta was appointed for the PA position. After delivering this news, she handed us our appointment letters and informed each of us how to reach our respective offices. After saying all this, she left. Once she was gone, Shweta hugged me and congratulated me for getting the job. I was equally happy.
She asked me, "Will you be able to support your family with this job?"
I replied positively. After that, we both congratulated each other and moved towards our respective destinations. Even though our conversation was short, it was very thoughtful. It described both of us.
During lunchtime, we met again in the canteen. I had just finished an article. After lunch, I had to submit that article to my senior editor, who would tell me my mistakes and the corrections I needed to make. Now, this is lunchtime. This office is enormous and marvelous. I love its interior design. Thinking this, I reached the canteen. The canteen is stocked with every food item, and the infrastructure is also very good. I moved into the canteen with all this in mind. Suddenly, someone patted my shoulder. When I turned to see who it was, I found it to be Ms. Shweta.
"Hi, Shweta. How is your day going?" I asked her.
She replied, "Yeah, it's okay. How is your day going?"
"Yeah, it's really nice," I said.
She said, "Okay, today I am going to treat you for getting my dream job."
Saying that, she moved towards the counter before I could reject her offer. Then she ordered food for herself and asked for my preferences. I told her mine. After getting our order, we both sat at a table and started eating our lunch.
"Don't tell me that this is your dream job. If it were your dream job, you wouldn't leave it for anyone else, but you were ready to leave it for me. So please don't say that," I said.
"You are not completely wrong," she replied.
"Okay, so now you are admitting that this job is not your dream job," I said.
After that, we both laughed.
Then she asked me, "How are you feeling about your editor job?"
I told her, "I am completely enjoying it. I love writing. I can write without even taking a break. I think this job suits me perfectly."
Then I asked her, "How is your job?"
"Actually, it is quite hard. Being the PA to one of the richest CEOs in the country is not easy. With a grumpy CEO, it is very, very hard," she said, making a crying face.
I laughed at her antics. Then I asked her, "How was your interview that day?"
She said, "The interview was fine. He asked me a few questions, and I answered him with my views..."
She shared her questions and how she responded to them. After hearing that, I was really dumbfounded. I didn't know why that guy told me that "she said she was ready to do any kind of adjustments, even sleeping with any man."
When she finished her monologue, I told her, "Do you know, Shweta, that man told me you said you were ready to do any kind of adjustments, even sleeping with any man?"
After hearing that, she became really irritated and made cursing faces.
"Did that monkey face really say such things about me?" she asked.
I smiled at her nickname for him. Who would call the interviewer a monkey face? But this girl in front of me did.
"Yes, he told me that day. It might have been for checking; I think so," I told her.
She said, "He might have been talking about a different girl. Why did he say the previous girl, monkey face?"
"Okay, don't take it to heart. You are really a nice person I have ever met," I said.
She smiled at my words from the heart.
Then she told me, "And the same goes for you, darling. Okay, okay, now I'm getting late. If I reach my grumpy boss's office late, he will bark at me. Okay, take care of yourself. We'll meet in the evening." Saying this, she left.
"Okay, bye," I said.
After lunch, I submitted my article to my senior editor. She seemed to be in her fifties. She is really polite to me. Not only to me, but she is also polite to everyone. When I submitted my article, she told me, "I thought you would submit this article by tomorrow afternoon, darling. But you are very quick. You submitted it this afternoon itself. I think you are well-suited for this job. Now, if I retire from this office, I won't have to worry about the company because I think this company has you. And your article is flawless. I am really impressed by your article."
I said, "Thank you, ma'am. It's my job. My pleasure."
"Okay, you can take your leave after 3:30," she said.
At 3:30, we were allotted some breaks. After 3:45, we had to work until 5 p.m. But due to my sincerity, she granted me permission to leave an hour and a half early. After 3:30, I messaged my friend Arjun to pick me up and went to the canteen to have a snack. There, I met Shweta again. During that meeting, we exchanged our mobile numbers quickly, as she was in a hurry to reach her boss's office to deliver his coffee. After that, Arjun and I reached his home.
When we arrived home, Arjun's sister was there with her husband, "Commissioner uncle." When we entered, he signaled us to follow him upstairs.
When we reached upstairs, he asked me, "How is everything going, child?"
"Uncle, I think everything is fine for now. You know, I am appointed as an editor, and that work is not even a little hard. It is very easy. I thought they would appoint me to some computer job that I would fail at miserably. You know I hate computer science. That's why I took the science group in my 11th and 12th grades. But you guys made me a computer engineer on my resume. I really don't know how people manage to be computer engineers. Is that even a job? Always being with computers, 24/7? No, no, no. I can't be a computer engineer."
Suddenly, someone smacked her head from behind. She knew her friend, Mr. i***t Arjun, smacked her because he is a computer engineer. Why wouldn't he smack her? "Stupid," she bickered. Suddenly, the commissioner made his presence known by clearing his throat. When they both heard him, they went to attention.
"Okay, darling, I know how hard it is for you to sit with a computer, but please endure it for a few days. Always remember the task; don't get diverted. You did not go there for an editor job. Okay, remember this, darling." Saying that, he left the terrace. While climbing down the stairs, he shouted, "If you find anything fishy, dangerous, or uncomfortable for you, immediately call any one of us, either me or that idiot." I nodded, looking at Ajju.
Thank you all for giving this book a chance. Bye-bye! Tata!
