RISKS AND PROFITABILITY

708 Words
Davis walked into Dr. Frank’s office, his nerves betraying the calm demeanor he was trying to maintain. "You must be Mr. Davis," Dr. Frank said as the door opened. Davis nodded slightly, taking in the doctor’s composed yet serious expression. "Alright, you can have a seat," Dr. Frank gestured toward the chair opposite his desk. Davis sat down. "Please fill out the patient’s form. Ensure that all the details you provide are accurate," Dr. Frank instructed, handing a file to Davis. Davis took the file and began filling it out diligently. When he was done, he handed it back to the doctor, who placed it on the mahogany table. Dr. Frank scribbled something on the form, but Davis didn’t pay much attention to it—it didn’t seem important. "Mr. Davis," Dr. Frank began, his tone shifting to one of concern, "your mother’s accident was a hit-and-run. She fell onto the asphalt, and the impact caused significant trauma to her brain. She will need surgery if there’s any chance of recovery." Davis swallowed hard, his anxiety building. "What are the risks and probabilities, Doctor? Based on what you’re saying?" Dr. Frank adjusted his rimmed glasses before replying. "Her chances are fifty-fifty. The surgery is critical, but her survival will depend on her resilience and ability to remain stable throughout the procedure." Davis took a deep breath. "I understand. My mother is a strong woman—I know she’ll get through this. How much will the surgery cost, Doctor?" "It will cost ten million naira," Dr. Frank said, his voice steady. "Alright, Doctor. Please go ahead and begin the treatment," Davis replied, trying to hide his unease. Dr. Frank hesitated. "We would love to, but we can’t proceed without full payment. It’s hospital policy." Davis nodded, though his mind raced with worry. "Alright, Doctor. I’ll be back in two days." He stood up and extended his hand for a handshake, which Dr. Frank accepted. Just as Davis turned to leave, Dr. Frank called out, "Mr. Davis, please don’t delay. Your mother’s survival also depends on how quickly you act." "I understand, sir," Davis replied softly before leaving the office. --- As Davis wandered through the hospital halls, he suddenly realized his wallet was missing. Panic began to set in as he searched his pockets and retraced his steps. An elderly nurse noticed his frantic behavior and approached him. "Young man, what are you looking for?" she asked kindly. "My wallet," Davis replied, his eyes scanning the area. "I don’t know where I left it." The nurse smiled gently. "Look at me," she said firmly, and Davis turned to face her. "I can’t help you find it, but I suggest you visit the security department and report it. They might be able to assist." "Thank you, ma’am," Davis said, grateful for her guidance. "Where can I find the office?" "Follow me. I’ll take you there," the nurse offered, leading him down the corridor. When they arrived at the security office, she gestured to the door. "Here it is. You can go inside." "Thank you so much, ma’am," Davis said, his gratitude evident. Inside, Davis realized he hadn’t knocked. Embarrassed, he stepped back and knocked politely. "Come in," a voice called. Davis entered and sat across from the man behind the desk, whose nameplate read Mr. Felix. "Let me guess—you’re Mr. Davis?" Mr. Felix asked, his sharp gaze meeting Davis’s. Davis hesitated, surprised. "Yes, sir. That’s me." Without wasting time, Davis explained his situation, providing every detail Mr. Felix requested. To his relief, Mr. Felix retrieved a wallet from the safe and handed it to him. "This is yours, I believe?" Davis beamed with gratitude. "Yes! Thank you so much, sir!" Before Davis could leave, Mr. Felix handed him a card. "This lady found your wallet and turned it in. Her details are on this card. She also mentioned she has a business proposal for you." "A business proposal?" Davis echoed, puzzled. Mr. Felix nodded. "Go and see her. It might be worth your time." Clutching the card, Davis thanked him profusely before leaving the office. He didn’t fully understand what kind of proposal awaited him, but for now, he was just relieved to have his wallet back.
