Mel put her head into her hands and wept. Holly returned from picking up a late lunch for the two of them and found her crying. She left the office phones on auto answer and locked herself in the office with her friend. “Mel, baby,” she said kneeling beside her chair, “what on earth is wrong? What’s happened?” She reached for Mel’s tissue box, took a couple and handed them to the woman that she’d never seen shed a tear in more than 12 years together on the force.
