Lights In The Sky

1777 Words
As she thought about all the events surrounding Michael being brought into this world she began remembering the night she was abducted. She was heading home from work on a dark country road, cars were speeding by her in the opposite direction with the drivers honking their horns and yelling at her to turn around. She paid no attention to them as she continued towards home. She figured they were just a bunch of drunken kids on a joyride messing with her. As she came out into a clearing she could see lights in the sky. They were hovering around in strange patterns and it looked like they were getting closer. All of a sudden the lights became so blinding she could barely see, and then she passed out. When she awoke she found herself strapped to a table, naked with only a sheet covering her. She looked up to see what she thought to be two werewolves standing on either side of her in lab coats. She almost thought she was hallucinating but it felt so real. Another wolf in a lab coat approached her with a strange cylindrical object filled with fluid and began to stick it between her legs. She tried to struggle but as she did she felt two paws hold her down; a white one and a black one. They were from the wolves on either side of her. As she felt the object penetrate her she began to cry out. Why! The white wolf looked down and smiled a wolfish grin that was intended to comfort her but was more than just a bit disturbing to Angela. The wolf never spoke but Angela could hear her voice in her mind. It’s going to be OK child; you’re being given a responsibility and a gift. The child inside you is special, and he will grow to save the world someday. It is your job to protect him until the time is right. The White Wolf placed her paw on Angela’s forehead and as she did a feeling of unbelievable peace came over her just before everything went black. Angela awoke to find herself back in her car on the side of the road. When she looked at her watch she noticed five hours had passed and it was now 3 in the morning. She was very groggy and couldn’t remember a whole lot but she saw seven lights rising into the sky until they were out of sight. She wondered if it had all happened, at least the bits and pieces she could remember; or had it all just been a dream? She couldn’t stop thinking about it as she continued the drive back to her house. When she got home her husband Matt was waiting up for her. He didn’t even give her a chance to explain, he just started yelling at her the moment she came through the door. Where the hell have you been? I’ve been worried sick! I tried calling the office and there was no answer! I called your parents and they didn’t know where you were! Your mother is freaking out! Angela started crying because the emotional pain she was feeling was only worsened by her husband’s comments. He couldn’t even begin to understand how frightened she was after everything that had happened and it seemed like he didn’t even care. She could tell he’d been drinking again which always made him more impossible to deal with. Goddamn it, answer me! Are you cheating on me? Have you been f*****g somebody behind my back! The accusation quickly shocked Angela out of the zone she was in. She couldn’t believe he could be so heartless and ask her a question like that. Especially after what had just happened, even if he didn’t believe her. He had to know how much she loved him and how hard she worked. She screamed back at him with tears welling up in her eyes. No! My god how could you think something like that! I love you! Haven’t I proved that to you enough? Angela was a very devout Catholic and Matt was the first and only man she had ever been with so this cut her very deeply. It was almost more than she could handle with everything else on her mind. But he just continued to yell at her. Well, then where have you been?! I don’t know what happened, one minute I was on my way home and the next minute I woke up in my car on the side of the road and it was five hours later. What are you trying to tell me, that aliens abducted you? Oh, come on Angela, if you’re going to lie to me at least make it better than that! It wasn’t a lie but how was she going to convince him? Even she thought she was crazy. I’m not lying to you; why won’t you trust me?! Angela ran to her room slamming the door behind her. She called her Mom to let her know she was alright. Her mother was a bit more understanding but she was still a little worried about Angela’s inability to account for the five hours she was on the side of the road. Matt slept on the couch that night which only furthered the hurt Angela was feeling. She lay in bed sobbing until she finally cried herself to sleep. The next morning when she woke up she ran to the bathroom to throw up, and she couldn’t hold anything down throughout the day. This continued for almost a week until she had finally had enough and went to see her doctor. He gave her the news she wasn’t sure she wanted to hear. It was morning sickness; she was pregnant. When she got home, she let Matt know the news but he didn’t take it so well. It just started another argument. Whose is it? Angela looked at him in disbelief wondering how he could be so cold. She screamed back at him. It’s yours damn it, I haven’t been sleeping with anyone but you! That’s impossible; I’ve been using the rhythm method! Well, I guess your rhythm was off! Her last comment infuriated Matt which scared Angela. She didn’t think he would get violent but at this point, she didn’t know what he was capable of. He screamed back at her with so much anger and hatred in his voice. That’s it; I don’t want to have anything more to do with you or your little accident. Matt left slamming the front door behind him and only came back to get his belongings a few days later. Angela moved back in with her parents out of desperation because she would need all the help she could get now that she was pregnant. Her Mother and Father graciously welcomed her back with open arms; they never cared for Matt too much. This only fueled their hatred towards him. They knew their daughter was an honest and faithful woman because they raised her well. They couldn’t believe he would accuse her of any infidelities. Angela’s pregnancy was a rough one. The morning sickness continued throughout the entire 9 months, which left her in a weakened state. Through it all though she still managed to keep her job as a secretary for an Insurance company. She knew her child would need at least one responsible parent in its life, so no matter how hard it got she still pressed on. Surprisingly three months before Angela was to give birth, Matt called her. He said he was sorry for the way he had acted and wanted her back. He said he wanted a paternity test and if it turned out to be his he would take full responsibility. Angela accepted his terms, much to the dismay of her parents, but she had no intention of being a single mother if she didn’t have to. The birth was very difficult. It got so bad at one point that her doctor told her she would have to choose between her life and the life of her child. Angela chose her child’s life over her own, but luckily at the last minute, the doctor was able to save them both. The paternity test results came through and revealed that Matt was the father, much to the relief and confusion of Angela. Had she just imagined all the events of that night? This question stayed with her and she couldn’t shake it until one night about three years later when Michael came running into her room and told her that he woke up and wolves that walked like people surrounded his bed. He said they looked like ghosts. He even said one of them looked at him and talked but he could only hear her in his head. Mommy, she said, “Welcome”. What did she mean? Angela looked at him in shock. It was all true, it must have happened. How else could Michael have experienced something so similar? Matt groaned as he looked at the clock. Go back to bed, it’s 3 AM and I need to get up for work in a few hours. Angela took Michael back to his room to tuck him in. As she was laying him down she noticed that something had changed. Michael’s beautiful aqua blue eyes he had since he was born were now a golden yellow, just like a wolf’s eyes. She stared into them for a while wondering why they would have changed color but she shook her head and figured it was probably nothing; but what if? Michael stood in front of his Mom and he noticed that she wasn’t paying attention to him. She was looking off into space and nothing he said or did seemed to be getting her attention. Mom? Michael put his hand on her shoulder and shook her a bit to get her attention. Mom, are you all right? Angela snapped out of it to see Michael staring at her. Huh, oh yes Mike, I’m sorry. I was just lost in thought. Was there something you wanted? Michael looked down at her with a little concern on his face. I was saying good night, it's 9:00 so we’re heading off to bed. Oh, good night honey, I love you. Michael leaned in and hugged her and kissed her goodnight. I love you too Mom; I’ll see you in the morning. Are you sure you’re alright? Yes, I’m fine; I’ve just got a lot on my mind. Alan and Lisa waved from the entrance to the hallway. Goodnight Alan, goodnight Lisa.
