Chapter 13 — The Wrong Patient The next morning, Travis confronted the hospital director. “You know about Project Thursday.” The director didn't look surprised. “I know many things.” “Did I work here fourteen years ago?” “No.” The answer came too quickly. Travis placed the photograph on the desk. “Then explain this.” The director examined it. “Photographs can be altered.” “My memories can't.” The director looked up. “Memories are among the easiest things to alter.” Travis felt cold. “Who was Room 214?” “A storage room.” “Why was it sealed?” “Structural damage.” “And May?” The director's expression hardened. “You're becoming too emotionally involved.” “She's my patient.” “Exactly.” Travis stared at him. “What happened to the other students?” “What other students?” “Emily Ross.” The director stood. “Dr. Hale, you are dangerously close to crossing a line.” “Maybe that line needs to be crossed.” The director's face became unreadable. Then a voice came from the doorway. “Don't trust him.” Travis turned. Daniel stood there. Alive. He looked exhausted. His clothes were dirty, and there was a cut above his eyebrow. “Daniel?” Daniel nodded. “I need to talk to you.” The director immediately stepped forward. “Daniel, you shouldn't be here.” Daniel backed away. “I know what you did.” The director's expression changed. Daniel looked at Travis. “Don't trust May.” Travis remembered the note. “What happened to you?” Daniel swallowed. “I found something.” “What?” “The notebook.” “Which notebook?” “May's.” Travis stared at him. “Where is it?” Daniel looked toward the director. “Not here.” “Where?” “In the old archives.” The director interrupted. “Daniel is confused.” Daniel shook his head. “No.” He looked at Travis. “May wasn't the patient.” Travis felt his heartbeat quicken. “What?” Daniel whispered: “She was the witness.” Then the lights went out. When they returned, Daniel was gone. So was the director. And on Travis's desk was one sentence: FIND THE ORIGINAL FILE.
