Chapter 14 — What Happened That Night Daniel appeared two days later. He contacted Travis from an unknown number and told him to meet at an abandoned university lecture hall. Travis arrived alone. Daniel was waiting. “You shouldn't have come.” “You contacted me.” “I know.” “What happened?” Daniel handed him a flash drive. “I found the archives.” Travis took it. “There were seven students.” “Seven?” “Seven who were connected to Project Thursday.” Daniel looked away. “Some disappeared. Some were transferred. Some were declared unstable.” “And May?” “She was there.” “As a patient?” “No.” Daniel's voice dropped. “She saw everything.” Travis remembered the photograph. “What did she see?” “Experiments.” “What kind?” “Memory manipulation.” Travis went silent. Daniel continued. “They wanted to understand how trauma could change memory.” “And they used students.” “Yes.” “Who authorized it?” Daniel hesitated. “You.” Travis stared at him. “That isn't possible.” “That's what the records say.” “Forged?” “Probably.” “By whom?” Daniel didn't answer. Travis plugged the flash drive into his laptop. Files appeared. Reports. Photographs. Names. Then a scanned signature. Dr. Travis Hale. He stared at it. “I never signed this.” “I know.” A video file opened automatically. Young Travis appeared on screen. He looked frightened. Behind him was Room 214. He spoke to someone off camera. “We have to stop this.” The video ended. Travis couldn't breathe. Daniel looked at him. “You found out what they were doing.” “And they erased my memory.” Daniel nodded. “But there's something worse.” “What?” “Someone wanted May blamed.” “For what?” “The entire project.” Travis looked at the files again. A photograph showed May standing outside Room 214. She was much younger. Behind her stood Professor Voss. Travis recognized him immediately. “Voss.” Daniel nodded. “He was there from the beginning.” Travis closed the laptop. “Where is May?” Daniel looked toward the door. “She knows more than she's told you.” “Then we find her.” Daniel shook his head. “You don't understand.” “What?” Daniel whispered: “She already knows we're looking.”
