Chapter 4 — The Girl in Room 214
Room 214 had been closed for years.
At least, that's what the hospital administrator told Travis.
“Why are you asking about it?”
“Old records.”
The administrator frowned.
“There's nothing useful there.”
“Then you won't mind showing me.”
He didn't.
But Travis noticed the hesitation.
Room 214 was at the end of an abandoned corridor.
Dust covered the windows.
The door was locked.
A faded label remained above it.
214.
Travis stared at the number.
Then he remembered May's expression.
You're looking in the wrong place.
He returned to his office and searched the hospital database.
The records were incomplete.
Patient names.
Dates.
Discharge notes.
Then he found something.
Patient: M. Carter
Travis froze.
The date was fourteen years earlier.
That was impossible.
May wasn't even old enough.
He opened the file.
The patient's full name had been redacted.
Only the initial remained.
M. Carter.
He kept scrolling.
The final note read:
Patient transferred after repeated reports involving Thursday sessions.
Travis stared at the screen.
Thursday sessions?
Fourteen years ago?
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then a whisper.
“Stop looking for Room 214.”
The call ended.
Travis immediately checked the security camera outside his office.
Nobody was there.
Except a woman standing at the far end of the corridor.
She was wearing a dark coat.
She slowly turned toward the camera.
Then disappeared around the corner.
