Chapter 5 — Don't Trust the School
“Don't trust Westbridge.”
May said it before sitting down.
Travis closed the door.
“You've said that before.”
“Because you haven't listened.”
“Why shouldn't I trust them?”
May looked at the clock.
3:00 PM.
“They're the reason I'm here.”
“The school referred you because of an incident.”
“No.”
She leaned forward.
“They referred me because I found something.”
“What?”
“Daniel found it first.”
Travis remained silent.
May took a folded piece of paper from her pocket.
She placed it on his desk.
It was a list of names.
Seven names.
Beside each name was a date.
The final name was Daniel Reed.
His date was yesterday.
Travis looked up.
“Why is Daniel's date yesterday?”
“Because yesterday was when he disappeared.”
Travis's expression changed.
“Daniel disappeared?”
“That's what the school says.”
“Where is he?”
“I don't know.”
“You're telling me the police are involved?”
“They were.”
“Were?”
May nodded.
“Someone told them Daniel ran away.”
“Did he?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
She looked directly at him.
“Because he sent me a message this morning.”
Travis's heart skipped.
“What did it say?”
May hesitated.
Then she handed him her phone.
One message.
No number.
No name.
Just four words.
He's listening to you.
Travis slowly looked around the room.
The recording device beneath his desk suddenly seemed much louder.
