Chapter 20 — Her Secret
May told Travis everything.
Voss had continued Project Thursday privately.
He had recreated parts of the program using old records.
Students were no longer the official subjects.
Instead, he manipulated people through psychological experiments and falsified records.
“Why me?” Travis asked.
“Because you remember.”
“I barely remember anything.”
“You remember enough.”
May placed a tablet on the table.
A video began playing.
Young Travis stood in Room 214.
Beside him was Voss.
Travis watched himself argue with the professor.
“You can't keep doing this.”
Voss replied:
“You've become emotionally attached.”
Young Travis looked toward the camera.
“I'm getting her out.”
Voss stepped closer.
“You won't remember this.”
The screen went black.
Travis stared at May.
“They erased me.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't they erase you?”
“Because they tried.”
She tapped her temple.
“I fought to keep remembering.”
A message appeared on May's phone.
She read it.
Her face changed.
“What?”
“Daniel.”
“What about him?”
“He's been taken.”
Travis stood immediately.
“By Voss?”
“I don't know.”
“Where is he?”
She showed him the message.
Only three words.
COME ALONE, MAY.
Travis shook his head.
“No.”
“I have to go.”
“You're not going alone.”
“You can't.”
“Why?”
“Because they want you too.”
Travis stared at her.
Then the lights in the library flickered.
Someone had entered.
May whispered:
“Travis…”
He looked toward the entrance.
A man stood there.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Calm.
Professor Elias Voss.
He smiled.
“You remember me.”
Travis stepped forward.
Voss turned and walked away.
By the time they reached the door, he was gone.
On the floor was a single envelope.
Inside:
ROOM 214. THURSDAY. 3 PM.
